Injuries are part and parcel of any sportsman’s career, but it has become a normal life for India’s wicket-keeper batter, Rishabh Pant, who was out of competitive cricket for the last two months due to a foot injury, which he picked while reverse sweeping Chris Woakes during the fourth Test of the series against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Pant has recovered from the fractured foot and has featured in both the unofficial Tests for India A against South Africa A at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He aimed to fully get prepared for the upcoming two-match Test series against the Proteas from November 14 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Pant, who walked into the bat on the third day of the second game after the dismissal of KL Rahul, smashed in his typical fashion with two boundaries and one six. The southpaw heaved the first one over the mid-wicket region before casually flicking the second one, followed by the usual swirl over the boundary face for an over boundary.

Moments later, a sharp bouncer from Tshepo Moreki hit him on the helmet when he attempted a reverse-sweep. He was down on the floor with the physio attending him for a concussion test. Later, a short ball hit the left-handed batter on his left forearm. Pant was early on the shot as the ball hit him flush on the elbow. He put his gloves on and looked in serious pain.

Moreki created more issues for the Delhi batter, who was trying to keep one ball down, ended up playing the wrong line, and was hit on the abdomen. It forced the physio to get back on the field thrice in 20 minutes. After a while, Pant walked off the field on 20 runs.

It would be a concern for the management on whether Pant would be fit ahead of their first Test a week later. Dhruv Jurel, in Pant’s absence, would continue to keep wickets for the Blue Brigade.
