A few months ago, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was known only as the 14-year-old opening batter from Bihar. However, an exceptional season for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) during the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 put him on the world stage. And that carried them as he got the chance to feature in the first youth Test in Beckenham between the Under-19 sides of India and England.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest Indian to take a wicket in the youth Test match. At the age of just 14 years and 107 days, he claimed the wicket of the England captain, Hamza Shaikh, which marked his place as the third-youngest player overall to achieve the outstanding feat in the longest format.

It was a flighted delivery over the off-stump of the batter, who used his power and went for the big shot over the mid-on fielder. However, the batter didn’t get the proper elevation in the shot, as the fielder grabbed a fine catch to send the opposition captain back to the dressing room. That was his first wicket in the first three overs.

That dismissal was the end of the 154-run partnership between Shaikh and Rocky Flintoff. His record surpassed the previous Indian mark set by Jharkhand’s Manishi, who bagged the wickets against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram in 2019 at just over 15 years of age. In the overall rankings, Suryavanshi is just behind the two Pakistan players, Mahmood Malik and Hidayatullah Khan, who set the record at an age of just 13.

After the wicket of Shaikh, the Indian young left-arm spinner went on to pick the wicket of the wicket-keeper, Thomas Rew, who tried to cut the outside-off ball that ended up edging into the hands of Ahigyan Kundu. The match saw the tourists establish a commanding position with a first innings total of 540 runs on the board.

The Rajasthan batter, in the first innings, struggled for 14 runs in 13 balls before celebrating a 56-run knock in the second innings off just 44 deliveries, thanks to the strike rate of 127.27, shouldering on nine boundaries and one six. The game, on the fourth day, is expected to end in a drawn result.
