Initially seen as a future asset by Rajasthan Royals, he was thrust into the spotlight after Sanju Samson's injury midway through the season. he had a breakout performance that helped RR completely reverse the course of the season and vaulted Vaibhav's name to the top of the list of the best young prospects coming out of Indian cricket.

In a mere seven innings, he accumulated 252 runs at a mind-boggling strike rate of 206.55 with a fifty and a brilliant century. His game was so attractive that even when Samson came back, the team changed their batting order to include Vaibhav as an opener along with Yashasvi Jaiswal.
