On the eve of India’s opening ODI of the three-match series against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara, the two former captains, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, were seen practicing in the presence of their head coach, Gautam Gambhir, along with the captain, Shubman Gill. They went through some catching drills before putting their attention on the throwdowns.

Amidst all the talks of ODI being the easiest format in the words of a former Indian batter and renowned commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar, India starts their preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. With the form of Virat Kohli and Rohit, they are nearly locked for the world event 23 months later.

Kohli comes into the series with two centuries and two half-centuries in his last four ODI innings, along with one century against Railways and one half-century against Gujarat when he turned up for Delhi in the two group stage clashes in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26 at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Rohit also remains in great touch as he celebrated a half-century and one unbeaten century against Australia before following it up with two half-centuries against South Africa in the home series. He also celebrated a magnificent century for Mumbai at the Savai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

The weather is expected to remain friendly and perfect for a full match at the BCA Stadium. The pitch is the batter’s paradise, and a high-scoring contest is on the cards unless, of course, one side suffers an unexpected collapse in the batting department.

India is set to play their captain, Shubman Gill, at the opening position, who was out of the last 50-over series against South Africa due to injury, while Shreyas Iyer will also return to competitive cricket after being out with injury since the Australia series. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are expected to be the two spinners of the side.
