A bizarre incident happened in the ongoing Maharashtra Premier League (MPL 2025). In a match, the wicketkeeper throws a ball to run out the batter on strike, but somehow he manages to get the wicket of the batter at the non-striker's end.
The incident occurred during a match between Puneri Bappa and Raigad Royals. Facing Ramakrishna Ghosh, Royals battered Siddesh Veer to flick the ball on the leg side but failed to execute, and the ball went with a mild pace to the keeper, Suraj Shinde.
Shinde saw Veer's position and threw the ball with the hope of making him run out. He successfully hit the timber, but the batter was in the safe zone by then. That's normal in any cricket match, but in the match we are discussing, the incident took a new turn from there. After hitting the stumps on the striking end, the ball deflected and hit the non-striking end.
Royals had a bad day in office in all tasks
The batter at the non-striking end, Harsh Mogaveera, was naturally not ready to see the ball come towards his end and paved the path for his return to the dugout. Harsh Mogaveera, short of his crease, had to return without scoring a run.
Royals couldn't sustain the early blow and lost all their wickets for 103 runs in reply to Puneri Bappa's 202; Nikit Dhumal picked up 5-39 for Puneri Bappa. Yash Nahar, Puneri opener, was the highest run getter of the match. Keeper Shinde also bagged an important 40-run innings, facing only 12 balls, with a strike rate of 333.33.
Is it legal to hit both end stumps and make a run-out?
After the incident, cricket fans are curious to know more about the rule and whether it was a legal run-out or not. According to the MCC Law number 38.4, "the one whose ground is at the end where the wicket is broken." So, the umpire in the MPL 2025 match took the right decision to call the non-striking batter run out.
