Watch: Will Jacks' double-wicket over puts Sri Lanka on backfoot in ENG vs SL T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash
The off-spinner of the England side, Will Jacks, has pushed the home Sri Lanka side into the backfoot with his double-wicket over during the opening clash of the Super 8 stage of T20 World Cup 2026 in Kandy.

When England were restricted to 146/9 in their allotted 20 overs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy during the opening clash against Sri Lanka of the Super 8 stage in the T20 World Cup 2026, many expected the hosts to complete an easy chase with the bat in the second innings. But things certainly did not go as per the plan of the Sri Lankan side.
The right-handed opening batter, Pathum Nissanka, could not handle the short delivery from Jofra Archer and found the fielder to get back into the dressing room during the third over of the chase before Will Jacks changed the complexion of the game in its opening over of the innings.
On the third delivery of the over, Jacks dismissed Kushal Mendis, who looked to push the flighted delivery but ended up playing it back into the hands of the bowler. He did not account for the grip, and the last-minute bite did the trick for the veteran Sri Lanka batter.

That was the second dismissal for Mendis in three innings against Jacks, having scored only two runs in five balls in the T20 format of the game. On the very next ball, the OPS spinner got the wicket of Pavan Ratnayake for a golden duck.

The batter backed himself to play the big shot and ran down the pitch looking to tone it down the ground, but the ball was full and kept sliding away with a hint of drift as the batter was committed to playing the big shot and ended up slicing it off the toe end of the bat into the hands of the fielder.
Sri Lanka made one of the starts inside the power play of the entire World Cup as they lost five wickets for just 34 runs on the board inside six overs, with their captain, Dasun Shanaka, finding himself in the middle quite early in the innings.
Brief Scores: England 146/9 (Philip Salt 62, Dunith Wellalage 3/26) vs Sri Lanka 58/6 (Kamindu Mendis 13, Will Jacks 3/22)
