Delhi Capitals (DC) were ahead in the chase against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 in the last over after David Miller nailed the fourth delivery against Prasidh Krishna for a massive six. They needed two runs off the last two deliveries and failed to collect those. 

Krishna went short and slow against David Miller on the penultimate ball as the left-handed batter decided to avoid the single and took the onus on himself to club the last ball. But he missed the same delivery again, and Jos Buttler was sharp to run Kuldeep Yadav out in the crease to earn the nervy one-run victory.

Ravichandran Ashwin reacts to David Miller’s planning

The former Indian spin all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, reckoned that it was peculiar to see Miller not giving the strike back to Kuldeep, which could have drawn the clash.

“I was thinking about what David Miller was doing. If I were Kuldeep, I would have literally pushed him to the other end and run! I just can't understand it; it’s beyond me, it’s bonkers. When you need four or six runs, it makes sense, but when you need only two, what are the odds? You can at least take a single.” Ashwin revealed on his YouTube channel.

The veteran felt that such a tactic would have been right had Delhi needed four or six runs off the last ball. He also addressed that the win would open the gate for Gujarat to make a strong comeback in the competition.

“Even if Kuldeep doesn't hit it or gets bowled, in a 1-in-10 game, if you reach a Super Over, you've done well. But still, what did I tell you? Delhi might find a way to keep itself out of the tournament.” The Chennai-born shed light.

“By losing like this, you’re doing two things: you've shaken your own team's confidence, and you've let a team like Gujarat Titans back into the tournament. If they had lost today, they would be in a Catch-22, wondering how to move forward, but you gave them a lifeline while you're still stuck at 4 points.” Ashwin added.

GT earn first IPL 2026 victory by nervy one-run

Gujarat didn’t begin their IPL 2026 event on the right note with successive defeats against Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, but they finally got their first victory under their belt to be at the sixth position on the points table.

Meanwhile, the Capitals, who experienced their first defeat of the season, dropped to the fourth position with two wins in three encounters at a positive net run rate. This clash between the two sides was the only meeting between them.
