The five-time champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) heading into the 2026 season of the event, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), came into the auction with an approach of buying new and young players, on whom they could invest in the future, having not earned the same success with their experienced players.

That saw the CSK side going hard for a massive price of INR 14.20 crore for Prashant Veer, the spin all-rounder coming from Uttar Pradesh. The 20-year-old has been making his debut for the yellow franchise at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai against the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Prashant Veer’s background, domestic career, and rise to IPL

Veer’s rapid growth has been built on performances with the bat and ball in hand. The left-arm spin bowling all-rounder was first spotted while representing Noida Super Kings in the UP T20 league, where his match impact would stand out in a competitive field.

That promise translated to the national stage. Across the six games in seven days between Mumbai and Kolkata, Veer underlined both his fitness and temperament. He signed off with 112 runs at a strike rate of 170 and backed it up with nine wickets at an economy rate of just 6.76.

In the List A cricket, the spinner has earned 10 wickets in eight innings at an average of 36.90 and scored 133 runs in seven innings at a fine strike rate of 120.90.

Why Chennai Super Kings picked young spin all-rounder in auction

Chennai Super Kings lost their veteran spin all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, ahead of the auction through the trade process, and that gave them the chance to bring a new and young Indian spin all-rounder into the set-up, who could serve them in the future.

That was why they went hard against Veer, and the other teams’ wish to sign the same player perhaps proved to them to be walking in the right direction. Veer will hope to bring the same dimension of Jadeja into the IPL 2026 for the Super Kings.

What Prashant Veer brings to CSK in IPL 2026

Prashant has the talent and the skill to go hard against the bowlers in the death overs. With a strike rate of 167.16 for his 112 runs in seven innings, Veer has been a useful member for the Super Kings.

Even with the ball, he has a T20 economy rate of under seven, and he can prove to be one of the best operators for them with Noor Ahmed inside the middle overs, and put pressure on the opposition batters.
