"Why drop Shubman Gill...?"- Yograj Singh slams India's Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel
The former Indian pacer and the father of the premier spin all-rounder Yuvraj Singh- Yograj Singh, has slammed the selection panel of Ajit Agarkar on the snub of Shubman Gill for T20 World Cup 2026.
Shubman Gill’s omission from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad has come as shocking news and a major talking point. The decision raised eyebrows after he served the role of vice-captaincy in the recent T20I series against the Proteas. While this omission could be termed as a balanced one, the last-minute decision may hamper the team combination.
The former Indian pacer, Yograj Singh, who is the father of their former premier spin all-rounder, Yuvraj Singh, questioned the selectors’ decision to leave the Punjab-born out, expressing his surprise over the call and arguing that a few low scores should not go against the stature of the national side.

“Shubman Gill is a vice-captain. What is the reason behind dropping him? Just because he failed in 4-5 innings? Indian cricketers have had so many players who have barely managed to perform in 10 matches out of 100 opportunities.” Yograj Singh expressed in a show on the YouTube channel of Ravi Bisht.

Gill made his comeback to the T20I set-up during the Asia Cup and was given the vice-captaincy. He, however, failed to nail down the permanent spot at the top order, scoring 291 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 137.26, with the help of a single half-century. Yograj criticized the selection call by citing the example of Abhishek Sharma.
“They still played; you already know the reason why. Young Abhishek Sharma arrived a couple of years ago. If he fails four innings, will you drop him as well?” Yograj added.
“Let me give you an example of the ‘great’ Kapil Dev. When we toured Pakistan with Bishan Singh Bedi as captain, Kapil Dev continued to play matches despite failing with bat and ball. But Bishan Singh Bedi still took him on the subsequent tour of England.” The former pacer concluded that India will begin their campaign on February 07 against the United States of America (USA) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
