Why is Shubman Gill not playing today in GT vs RR IPL 2026 game?
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill is not playing in the GT vs RR IPL 2026, which Ahmedabad is hosting on Saturday night.

The IPL 2022 champions Gujarat Titans (GT) are ready to host their first game of the IPL 2026, as they are facing Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday night (April 4). However, before the match, the hosts GT have suffered a huge blow, as their captain Shubman Gill is not playing the match.
Gujarat Titans have started the IPL 2026 with a close defeat against Punjab Kings, which had a thrilling contest. While Titans scored 162/6 in the first innings, the hosts PBKS chased down the target in 19.1 overs after losing seven wickets.
For the match against Rajasthan Royals, Titans captain Gill is unavailable, as the Afghan star Rashid Khan is leading the team. The leg-spinner was present in the toss, where he confirmed that the regular skipper Gill is completely out of the match. Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag won the toss and chose to bat first in the game.

Reason for Shubman Gill missing GT vs RR game in IPL 2026
GT captain Shubman Gill is absent from the match due to a fitness issue. At the toss, GT stand-in captain Rashid Khan confirmed that Gill had a muscle spasm, for which he has been rested from the game. Even the experts feel that Gill has been rested only as precautionary measure while the player wasn't in the dugout, rather than present the team on the field.
Shubman Gill out of touch in T20 cricket
Indian Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is currently struggling in T20 cricket. While serving as an opener, the right-handed batter Gill has been criticised for slow starting the innings that affect the team's score, as it puts early pressure on the other batters. His last 50+ score in T20 cricket was in May 2025, as he hasn't scored 50+ runs in his last 19 innings. In his last 19 T20 innings, Gill recorded 30+ scores only five times. While Gill has recently been dropped from the national team in T20I format, the IPL 2026 is a good platform to prove himself in the format once again.
