Shubman Gill is not playing on Day 1 of India's warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI after suffering a finger injury during a training session on the eve of the match. The BCCI confirmed that the India captain injured his right finger while fielding in the slips and has been rested as a precaution.

Gill is currently under the observation of the BCCI Medical Team, while KL Rahul is leading the Indian side in the three-day practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. With the first Test against Sri Lanka starting on August 15, the team management will hope that Gill recovers in time.

India's injury concerns continue to grow ahead of the Test series. Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are already unavailable due to injuries, while Sai Sudharsan is yet to join the squad. Gill's injury is another setback, although the team will be hoping it is not a serious one.

The warm-up match is being played at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo from August 7. Both teams will use the three-day game to prepare for the upcoming two-match Test series, while India will closely monitor Gill's recovery before the first Test.

What happened — Gill's thumb and slip-catching blows in training

Shubman Gill suffered an injury to his right ring finger during India's training session ahead of the warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. According to reports, the India captain was first hit on his right hand while facing pacer Gurnoor Brar in the nets. Although he received treatment and continued batting against the spinners, he later took another blow to the same hand while practising slip catches.

After the training session, the team management decided not to risk Gill in the opening day of the three-day warm-up match. KL Rahul took over the captaincy for the practice game, while the BCCI Medical Team continued to monitor Gill's recovery ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

The BCCI said in its official statement: "Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill's absence."

What this means for India ahead of the first Test in Galle on August 15

The warm-up match is an important part of India's preparations for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15 in Galle. Reduced from four days to three, the practice game gives the players valuable time to adjust to Sri Lanka's spin-friendly conditions after their last Test appearance in June.

Shubman Gill's absence on Day 1 is a concern, but the BCCI has confirmed that he has been rested only as a precaution. The Indian team will hope that the captain recovers quickly and is available for the opening Test, where his presence will be crucial.

The warm-up match also marks the beginning of Subhadeep Ghosh's tenure as India's new fielding coach. He takes charge after the BCCI decided not to extend the contracts of former fielding coach T Dilip and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate. The practice game gives the new support staff an opportunity to work closely with the squad before the Test series begins.
