An entertaining Day 1 of the first Test between the West Indies and Australia at Kensington Oval, Barbados. On a fresh track, pacers from both teams dominated the day.

West Indies vs. Australia, 1st Test, Day 1:

  • Australia: 180/10 (56.5)
  • West Indies: 57/4 (20)

West Indies started the day with a stellar spell by Shamar Joseph. He ended his 1st innings bowling figure with 4 wickets, but it could have been more. Sloppy fielding by the West Indies resulted in multiple dropped catches. Debutant Brandon King dropped at least two easy chances, and captain Roston Chase also couldn't grab the ball in the slip on one occasion. Despite multiple missed fieldings, Australia, batting first, managed to reach only 180 before losing all of their ten wickets.

At the beginning of the innings, it was Joseph who found the correct line and length. He forced batters to play and stepped into the trap. Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, and Beau Webster fall prey to the speed star. But the man who demolished the later part of the Australian batting line-up was Jayden Seales. He completed a 5-wicket haul. While Joseph struck the top order, Seales targeted the middle and lower order. Travis Head, with his 59-run innings, was the highest run-getter of the day, and the second best was Usman Khawaja's 47.

It was almost the recap of the Australian innings when the West Indies went to bat. The pace trio—Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood—did not take too much time to find their rhythm. Starc already claimed a couple of wickets, and Cummins and Hazlewood claimed one each.

Key factors of Day 1:

  • Multiple drop catches by West Indies
  • 59-run knock by Travis Head
  • Ausyrain bowlers found their targets early
