Heading into the second semifinal of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 between India and England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the focus was on how Abhishek Sharma, India’s opening batter, would perform in the event, as he had been struggling for most games of the competition, but had a very good record against the England side.

England’s captain, Harry Brook, decided to introduce the trump card, Will Jacks, in the second over of the innings. The first ball of the over was cut from the middle and leg stump towards the off side by the left-handed batter, Abhishek Sharma, for a boundary as the ball went past the backward point region. The fifth delivery of the over was smashed over mid-off for the same result.

However, Jacks finally had his revenge on the last ball of the second over. It was a slower delivery through the air as it drifted inwards the southpaw, who jogged down the track and backed away in the process to play the aerial flick. The ball got the height but not the distance.

It came off the bottom part of the bat as Phil Salt came in from the deep mid-wicket region and grabbed the catch comfortably to draw the first blood. The entire England side was pumped up to see Abhishek Sharma being dismissed for nine runs in seven balls with the help of two boundaries.

Abhishek has now been dismissed thrice against the off-spinners in the World Cup. In five innings, he has faced 27 balls against the off-spinner and has managed only 29 runs at an average of 9.66 and a strike rate of 107.40. His nightmare of the event continued to happen,

Meanwhile, Brook dropped Sanju Samson in the very next over as the right-handed batter took full advantage of it and smashed Jofra Archer for 14 runs in the same over. Ishan Kishan also came up with an aggressive approach and made their way to 55/1 in five overs of the innings.
