In the ninth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, inaugural champions England Women kicked off their campaign with a solid 21-run victory over a competitive Bangladesh Women side at Sharjah. England set a target of 119, which proved too much for Bangladesh, as they could only manage 97/7 in their 20 overs.

Wyatt-Hodge leads England’s strong start

Danni Wyatt-Hodge anchored the English innings, scoring 41 off 40 balls with five boundaries. She, along with opener Maia Bouchier, provided a steady start, helping England reach 47/0 by the end of the powerplay. Despite a middle-order collapse, Wyatt-Hodge’s performance gave England the foundation for their defendable total of 118/7.

Linsey Smith and Charlie Dean shine with the ball

England's bowlers controlled the game with Linsey Smith (2/11) and Charlie Dean (2/22) delivering crucial breakthroughs. Smith’s tight bowling in the middle overs stifled Bangladesh’s chase, while Dean picked up key wickets to keep the pressure on. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sarah Glenn also contributed by picking up a wicket each.

Sobhana Mostary fights hard for Bangladesh

For Bangladesh, Sobhana Mostary was the standout performer, battling hard to score 44 off 48 balls. She stitched a 35-run partnership with captain Nigar Sultana, but lacked the necessary support from the other end. Mostary’s efforts, while valiant, were not enough to lead her team to victory.

Despite Bangladesh's strong comeback with the ball, England’s early advantage and disciplined bowling proved decisive in this contest.
