New Zealand Women secured a thrilling eight-run victory over West Indies Women in the second semi-final of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024. With this win, New Zealand advanced to the final, setting up a clash with South Africa Women in a bid for their first-ever T20 World Cup title.
Sophie Devine's side set modest target
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, New Zealand Women posted 128/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer laid a solid foundation with a 48-run partnership. Bates contributed 26 runs, while Plimmer anchored the innings with 33 off 31 balls. Despite their strong start, New Zealand's middle order struggled against West Indies bowlers. Deandra Dottin was the star with the ball for the West Indies, picking up four wickets, while Afy Fletcher claimed two.
Wicketkeeper-batter Isabella Gaze played a crucial late cameo, scoring 20 not out off 14 balls, pushing New Zealand's total past the 120-run mark.

Amelia Kerr shines in the bowling attack
New Zealand's bowling unit, led by Amelia Kerr and Eden Carson, rose to the occasion to defend the modest total. West Indies Women, chasing 129, lost wickets early and were unable to gain momentum. Eden Carson removed three of the top-order batters, including captain Stafanie Taylor for 13, finishing with impressive figures of 4-0-29-3.
Amelia Kerr then took charge in the middle overs, dismissing the dangerous Deandra Dottin for 33 after she had smashed three sixes in a single over, bringing West Indies back into the game. Kerr's spell of 4-0-14-2, which included 15 dot balls, proved pivotal in halting the West Indies chase.
Deandra Dottin's fighting effort falls short
West Indies struggled from the beginning, losing two wickets in the powerplay and failing to recover. Captain Hayley Matthews was dismissed for 15 runs, while Aaliyah Alleyne managed only four. It was Deandra Dottin who ignited hopes of a comeback, scoring a quickfire 33 off 22 balls, including three sixes in a single over, but her dismissal in the 17th over ended West Indies' chances. Despite some late resistance from Afy Fletcher (17*) and Zaida James (14), the Caribbean side fell just short, finishing on 120/8.
New Zealand Women now face South Africa Women in the final, with a new champion set to emerge in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024.
