In the Group A match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, India Women secured their largest victory (by runs) in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history after thrashing Sri Lanka Women by 82 runs.

India Women captain Harmanpreet Kaur chose to bat first after winning the toss at Dubai. India Women scored 172/3 in 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka Women were all out for 90 runs.

Openers set a good start

Indian openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma provided a strong start. After scoring 41/0 in the powerplay, they continued their solid batting performance. While they had a 98-run partnership, Mandhana scored 50 runs and Verma scored 43 runs.

Both openers lost wickets in back-to-back deliveries

In the 13th over, both the set openers lost wickets on consecutive deliveries. First, Mandhana was run out before the Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu took Verma's wicket.

Harmanpreet Kaur had no mercy

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur batted powerfully and scored 52 not out off 27 balls, as India Women recorded the highest total in the ongoing WT20 WC 2024 tournament.

No challenge against Indian bowlers

Chasing the big total, Sri Lanka lost their first three wickets only for six runs. Only Kavisha Dilhari (21), Anushka Sanjeewani (20), and Ama Kanchana (19) managed to reach the double-digit scores in that innings.

All the five Indian bowlers took at least one wicket each. While Arundhati Reddy (3/19) and Asha Sobhana (3/19) had identical figures with three wickets each, Renuka Singh (2/16) bagged two wickets.
