Ishan Kishan smashed a record-breaking 42-ball century against New Zealand, the fastest T20I hundred against the Kiwis. His knock surpassed previous records and underlined his explosive form and impact at the international level

In the fifth T20 International against New Zealand on January 31 at Thiruvananthapuram, Ishan Kishan of Team India produced a spectacular batting display. When India opted to bat first after winning the toss, Kishan entered the game at number three and applied immediate pressure on the New Zealand bowlers. He exhibited an aggressive style of play and collected his first hundred in T20 Internationals by scoring a magnificently played and executed century.
Over the 20 overs of play, Kishan pounded 103 runs off 43 balls with 6 fours and an incredible 10 sixes for a strike rate of 239.53. His 103 runs helped India reach a total of 271 runs for 5 wickets after their allotted 20 overs. In the entire series Kishan scored 215 runs in 4 matches for an average of 53.75 and a remarkable strike rate of 231.18; these numbers clearly illustrate Kishan's outstanding form and contribution to the Indian Team's success.

After his fantastic century, Ishan Kishan has made his mark as a member of the elite group of players who have reached 1,000 runs in T20I cricket for India. He becomes only the 14th Indian batter to achieve this feat. Ishan made his international T20I debut against England in 2021. After a brief hiatus from T20I cricket, he returned during the New Zealand series and has played 36 T20I matches. He has scored over 1,011 runs across that period in 36 innings while averaging 28.88 and striking at an incredible rate of 137.92 to date. Ishan’s T20I record consists of 1 century and 7 half-centuries, which demonstrates his ability to play effectively on the international stage.
#2 Fifth fastest T20I hundred for India
Ishan Kishan hit his century off 42 balls, finishing with a six (off Mitchell Santner) to reach the milestone. His explosive innings is now the fifth-fastest T20I century by an Indian, beating the previous record of 45 balls set by Suryakumar Yadav. Kishan was aggressive in his innings and was able to dominate quality bowling attacks right from the beginning.
Rohit Sharma holds the record for the fastest T20I century by an Indian when he scored a century in 35 balls against Sri Lanka in Indore, India in 2017. Abhishek Sharma has the second-fastest T20I century (37 balls) against England at Wankhede Stadium in 2025. Sanju Samson scored a 40-ball century against Bangladesh in Hyderabad, India in 2024, while Tilak Varma scored a 41-ball century against South Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2024.
#1 Fastest T20I hundred against New Zealand
Ishan Kishan’s incredible century of 42 balls is now the fastest by any player against New Zealand in T20 international matches. Ishan has surpassed Kusal Perera of Sri Lanka, who previously held the record for the fastest T20I century against New Zealand. Perera reached his century in 44 balls against New Zealand at Nelson in 2020. Hasn Nawaz of Pakistan scored a century in 44 balls against New Zealand at Auckland in 2020, and therefore shares the previous record with Kusal.
The next fastest T20I century after Kishan, Perera and Nawaz belongs to South Africa’s Richard Levi, who scored his century in 45 balls against New Zealand at Hamilton in 2012. The next fastest T20I century after Kishan, Perera, Nawaz and Levi belongs to England’s Dawid Malan; he scored his century in 48 balls against New Zealand at Napier in 2019. Another Indian player, Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I captain for India has the fifth fastest Indian T20I century against New Zealand. He scored his century in 49 balls against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in 2022; before Ishan Kishan’s century, this was the fastest T20I century by an Indian against New Zealand in cricket history.
