5. Saransh Jain – 33y 145d (India vs Sri Lanka, Colombo, 2026)

Saransh Jain made his Test debut for India at the age of 33 years and 145 days, becoming one of India's oldest Test debutants in recent years. He received his debut cap from veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja before India's second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Jain replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI after the wrist-spinner was ruled out with an infection.

Jain's Test debut came after a strong domestic career in which he impressed as an all-rounder. In 54 first-class matches, he has scored 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75, including two centuries and 14 fifties. With the ball, he has taken 188 wickets at an average of 27.30, including 10 five-wicket hauls and a best of 6/75.

In List A cricket, Jain has scored 553 runs in 47 matches and taken 38 wickets, while in T20 cricket, he has made 37 runs and claimed 18 wickets in 20 matches. His consistent domestic performances eventually earned him his maiden India call-up and a Test debut at 33, showing that age is not always a barrier to reaching the highest level.

4. Shute Banerjee – 37 years, 124 days (India vs West Indies, 1949)

Shute Banerjee made his Test debut for India at the age of 37 years and 124 days against the West Indies at the Brabourne Stadium in Bombay in February 1949. The former medium pacer made an immediate impact by taking five wickets in his only Test match. Despite having a short international career, he remains one of India's oldest Test debutants.

Banerjee enjoyed a highly successful first-class career. He played 138 matches, scoring 3,715 runs at an average of 20.63, including five centuries and 11 fifties. With the ball, he took an impressive 385 wickets at an average of 26.68, including 15 five-wicket hauls and two 10-wicket match hauls. His best bowling figures were 8/25.

In his only Test, Banerjee scored 13 runs in two innings and took five wickets from 273 deliveries. He finished with bowling figures of 4/54 and 1/73, with an overall bowling average of 25.40. Although he played just one Test for India, his strong domestic record made him a respected cricketer of his time.

3. Keki Tarapore – 37 years, 329 days (India vs West Indies, 1948)

Keki Tarapore made his Test debut for India at the age of 37 years and 329 days against the West Indies in Delhi in November 1948. Despite his late entry into international cricket, he had already gained plenty of experience in domestic cricket. However, he played only one Test for India.

Tarapore was a consistent bowler in India's domestic circuit. He played 40 first-class matches and took 148 wickets at an average of 28.77, including five five-wicket hauls. His best bowling figures were 8/91. With the bat, he scored 441 runs at an average of 11.30.

In his only Test, Tarapore scored two runs and bowled 114 deliveries without taking a wicket. Although his international career was limited to one match, he remained involved in Indian cricket after retirement. He later became a cricket administrator and was involved with India's 1971 tour of the West Indies.

2. Cotah Ramaswami – 40 years, 39 days (India vs England, 1936)

Cotah Ramaswami made his Test debut for India at the age of 40 years and 39 days during India's tour of England in 1936. He made his debut against England in Manchester and impressed with the bat, scoring 40 runs in the first innings and 60 in the second. His late Test debut made him one of India's oldest players to represent the country in the format.

Ramaswami played only two Test matches for India and scored 170 runs at an average of 56.66. He also had a productive first-class career, scoring around 2,400 runs and taking 30 wickets. His experience and all-round ability made him a valuable player during his time.

Ramaswami was also a talented tennis player and represented India at Wimbledon. After retiring from cricket, he remained involved with the sport as an administrator. He served as the manager of India's first tour of the West Indies in 1953 and later worked as a national selector during the late 1950s.

1. Rustomji Jamshedji – 41 years, 27 days (India vs England, 1933)

Rustomji Jamshedji holds the record for being the oldest Indian cricketer to make his Test debut. He made his only Test appearance at the age of 41 years and 27 days against England in Bombay (now Mumbai) on December 15, 1933. Despite making his international debut at a very late stage, he had already built a strong reputation in domestic cricket.

Jamshedji was a left-arm spinner and was regarded as one of the finest bowlers in the Bombay Quadrangular. In his only Test, he bowled 35 overs and took three wickets for 137 runs. India lost the match by nine wickets, and Jamshedji did not get another opportunity to play at the international level.

Although his Test career lasted only one match, Jamshedji enjoyed a successful first-class career. He played 29 first-class matches and took 134 wickets, underlining his quality as a bowler. His late Test debut remains a unique record in Indian cricket and has stood for decades.
