Top 3 wicket takers in Women's Premier League

The third and 2026 edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) starts on January 09 with the two champion sides- Mumbai Indians Women (MIW) locking horns with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCBW) at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. One of them will be eager to add another winning trophy to their cabinet.

The tracks have been tough to bowl on at the start of the Indian season, where the batters enjoy their time in the middle. The spinners generally get some drift and spin from the slow and low surfaces, while the pacers use the speed to hurry the batters on occasions and get the swing with the new ball.

The top three bowlers with the most wickets in the list for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) remain three foreigners. In the case of the Indian players, Shikha Pandey remains the leading wicket-taker for the Blue Brigade with 30 wickets in 27 innings at an average of 23.20 and a strike rate of 20 with an economy rate of under seven.

A look at the top 3 wicket-takers in Women’s Premier League (WPL) history

1.   Hayley Matthews (Mumbai Indians)

Hayley Matthews remains one of the most important members of the Mumbai Indians in WPL history, thanks to her dual performances with the bat and ball in crucial junctures to bail the franchise out of trouble on many occasions.

Matthews remains the highest wicket taker in history, WPL, with 41 scalps in 29 innings at an average of 17.56 and a strike rate of 14.50, besides maintaining an economy rate of just about seven with the best figures of 3/5 in an innings.

Her best season with the ball came in 2 025 when she picked up 18 wickets in ten innings and an average of just about 17 and an economy rate of 8.22, thanks to the best figures of 3/16. Mathews has also contributed massively with the bat, pocketing 758 runs at a strike rate of more than 120 in 29 innings.

2.   Amelia Kerr (Mumbai Indians)

One of the biggest reasons for the success of the Mumbai Indians is that their two spinners have found a place at the top of the list for the most wickets in the history of the WPL. The New Zealand allrounder has picked up overall forty wickets in 29 innings of WPL at an average of under eighteen and an economy rate of 7.64.

In the previous season of WPL, Kerr enjoyed her best season with the ball as she bagged 18 wickets at an average of under 16 and a strike rate of 12.30. In the first season of the WPL, she picked up 15 wickets at an economy rate of just 6.45, which was a tremendous achievement from a young spinner.

Apart from that, the New Zealand batter has recorded 437 runs in Twenty 4 innings at an average of 24.27 and a strike rate of under 120, with the best score of unbeaten 45 runs.

3.   Sophie Ecclestone (UP Warriorz)

The veteran England spinner, Sophie Ecclestone, remains the third-leading wicket-taker in the history of WPL as she played all three seasons for the UP Warriorz. She has overall picked up 36 wickets in 25 innings at an average of 18.38 and a strike rate of 16.50. Her best quality with the ball is keeping it tight, as she maintained an economy rate of under seven.

The best season for Sophie came in the maiden season of WPL when she picked up 16 wickets at an average of under 15 and the economy rate of 6.61. In the previous season of the tournament, she struggled with the ball as she finished with nine wickets in eight innings and an average of 24.44 and an economy rate of close to seven.

The spinner, who has already played over 100 WT20Is, will bring a massive experience in the bowling department heading into the new season of the tournament.
