Top 5 most sixes for India in Tests ft. Rishabh Pant.

Rishabh Pant walked into the middle during the second day of the opening Test between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata after their captain, Shubman Gill, picked up a neck injury while attempting a lovely sweep shot over square-leg for a boundary.

But Pant continued his aggressive approach and nailed two sixes to overtake Virender Sehwag and become India’s leading six-hitter in the longest format.

Let’s take a look at the top five most successful six-hitters for India in the longest format ft. Rishabh Pant

1. Rishabh Pant

Pant negotiated the first couple of deliveries, during the opening South Africa Test in Kolkata, before using his feet and smashing the left-arm Protea spinner, Keshav Maharaj, over the cover region for a six. He creamed another such shot against the spinner before cracking two boundaries in his knock of 27 runs in 24 balls. He now has 92 sixes to overtake Virender Sehwag in the list of most sixes for India in the longest format.

Overall, the southpaw has scored 3454 runs in 83 innings at an average of around 44 and a strike rate of 75 with the help of eight centuries and 18 half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 159 runs. He has returned to the longest format after recovering from the foot injury he picked up during the previous Manchester Test against England.

2. Virender Sehwag

Whether it’s the white-ball format or the longest format, Virender Sehwag used to treat the bowlers with aggressive shots even on the very first ball of an over. Over the course of his career of 104 red-ball clashes, the right-handed opening batter nailed 90 sixes, and now he sits in the second position in the list.

Sehwag has clubbed 8586 runs in 180 innings of the five-day format at an average of nearly 50 and a strike rate of 82.23 with the help of 23 centuries and 32 half-centuries. His last Test for India came in 2013 against Australia in Hyderabad.

3. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, the former Indian Test captain, retired from the longest format just a few months ago. His inclusion in the longest format for the national side came a lot later after his international debut, as his first Test appearance was in Kolkata during Sachin Tendulkar’s 199th Test match.

The 38-year-old Mumbai batter, Rohit Sharma, entertained the crowd with some of his fabulous shots around the park. He is the third leading six-hitter for the national side with 88 over boundaries in just 116 innings. The Nagpur-born has overall smashed 4301 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 40.57 and a strike rate of 57.05 with the help of 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

4. Ravindra Jadeja

The talk of the town has been around Ravindra Jadeja, who has now left his long-time IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings, to be traded to his maiden IPL side, Rajasthan Royals, ahead of IPL 2026. The southpaw, who has retired from the shortest format for India, is another aggressive Test batter in the lower middle order.

Jadeja is the fourth leading six-hitter for the Blue Brigade in the longest format. The left-handed batting all-rounder has clubbed 80 over boundaries in just 87 games. In 129 innings, the veteran has smacked over 4000 runs at an average of around 39 and a strike rate of 55 with the help of six centuries and 27 fifties at the best score of 175*. Even with the ball, he picked up 338 wickets.

5. MS Dhoni

Is there any list of the six most sixes without the inclusion of the former Indian World Cup-winning captain, MS Dhoni, who seemed to have the only aim of nailing the big shots towards the start of his career? He remains India’s fifth leading six-hitter in the longest format with 78 over boundaries.

The 44-year-old has scored 4876 runs in 144 innings of the longest format at an average of nearly 38 and a strike rate of nearly 60 with the help of six centuries and 33 half-centuries at the best score of 224 against Australia in Chennai nearly 12 years ago. He played his last Test match in Melbourne during the BGT 2014/15.
