Virat Kohli is widely regarded as one of the greatest batters in the history of ODI cricket, while Mohammad Azharuddin is remembered for his elegance and wristy stroke play in the format. Kohli made his ODI debut in 2008 at just 19 and quickly established himself in a star-studded Indian batting lineup. He played crucial roles in India’s 2011 World Cup victory and the Champions Trophy wins in 2013 and 2025. His consistency, adaptability, and hunger for runs have made him one of the most celebrated cricketers in the modern era.

Kohli also took over India’s all-format captaincy in 2017, after having led the side sporadically in MS Dhoni’s absence. During his tenure as ODI captain, India reached the 2017 Champions Trophy final and the 2019 World Cup semi-final. His captaincy win percentage in ODIs stands at an impressive 68.42. Kohli’s leadership style was aggressive, yet tactical, and he was known for backing his players. His tenure helped shape a highly competitive Indian team capable of winning overseas.

The Delhi-born batting maestro holds numerous ODI records, including the most centuries in the format with 51*, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing tally of 49 during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kohli is also third on the all-time run-scorers list in ODIs, behind Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Known as the ‘run machine,’ Kohli’s unmatched chase-master ability and knack for performing in high-pressure situations have solidified his status as one of cricket’s all-time greats.

Mohammad Azharuddin and Virat Kohli both led team well in ODIs

In contrast, Mohammad Azharuddin may not have had the towering batting numbers of Kohli, but his contribution to Indian cricket was equally significant in his era. Known for his wristy elegance and impeccable timing, Azhar was a nightmare for bowlers who strayed onto his pads. He became the first batter to cross 9000 ODI runs and was admired for adapting his style to different match situations. His leg-side flicks and ability to find gaps made him one of the most stylish batters of his generation.

As a captain, Azharuddin led India to victories in the 1990-91 and 1995 Asia Cups and to the semi-finals of the 1996 World Cup. He remains the only Indian skipper to captain in three World Cups (1992, 1996, and 1999). His win percentage as India’s ODI captain was 51.7%. Azhar’s leadership was defined by a calm demeanor and an ability to inspire his teammates, making him one of India’s most respected cricket captains.
