England vs India in a T20 World Cup Semi-Final again. The last time we had this narrative it ended with Rohit Sharma in tears, consoled by Rahul Dravid. England made easy work of India, choking their batters and then manhandling their bowlers as they completed a ten-wicket win. India, going into a shell with the bat faced the consequences of playing in an outdated manner.
That T20 was the last to be played between both sides and 15 players remain from the teams that played that game. Interestingly, a lot happened in the two years with India revamping their T20 side and then bringing back their senior pros. The senior pros though are promising more aggression this time, sticking with their words, unlike last time.
England too, like last time came through some hurdles. This World Cup is in a way a redemption for them. They were really poor in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Nine people were retained for this World Cup and all of them are eager for redemption. In a way, it is a Semi-Final of redemption with India looking to erase memories of 2022 while England are looking to get rid of the ghosts of 2023.
Both sides stand well. England, the last side to qualify for the Super Eights was the first to make the Semis. India, on the other hand was unbeaten throughout and awaited the English challenge. There is a lot of rain in the forecast though which adds another aspect to watch.
Date: June 27th, 2024
Time: 8:00 PM IST
Venue: Providence, Guyana
Rain is likely to play a significant factor for the upcoming game. It is heavy on the forecast and will be a point to watch.
Providence is expected to play low and slow with a lot of sharp turn. Spinners are likely to have some fun and batting first could be better. Rain though could change that and if there is rain anywhere near the match batting second will be the better choice with a wet outfield reducing the effect of ball movement.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav
Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood,/ Chris Jordan, Reece Topley, Adil Rashid
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja has not had much to do all tournament. Batting at seven and eight, his role has been that of a last-over slogger. With the ball too, Hardik Pandya’s form and the presence of six bowlers has given him little to do. If Providence though plays low and slow as predicted Ravindra Jadeja could be the biggest weapon on either side. His height and pace make him a huge challenge on such a track and his four overs could be very crucial in the upcoming Semi-Final if there is even the slightest of grip on the track.
Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler has fond memories of his last Semi-Final against India. He will know that there is a bigger challenge this time. Both Bumrah and Jadeja tend to do well against him and that is where the change is likely to arise. His batting though has been really good through the tournament and Buttler remains high on confidence.
India is a changed side from the previous encounter. England though have made improvements of their own as well. Given the pressure likely, England could back themselves considering India’s form in the knock-out stages.
