The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) assigned the young cricketer as the captain of the ODI team for the high-octane tournament. Rohit, who was the captain before Gill, will take part in the tournament only as a batter. Rohit and Virat Kohli are all set to make a comeback for the Men in Blue after the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. They retired from the T20I format right after winning the T20I World Cup, and ahead of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, both batters signed off from Test cricket.
The board assigned Gill as the Test team captain for the five-match Test series. Without the services of the two stalwarts, Team India under Shubman's leadership performed in a promising way and ended the tournament with a 2-2 scoreline. A few days ago, India clean swept the West Indies in a 2-match Test series as well. Now, Gil will lead India on ODIs as well.
