Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has heaped praise on the Indian team for their spirited performance in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, reserving special admiration for young skipper Shubman Gill. India may not have clinched the series, but coming from behind to draw 2-2 has earned admiration from fans and cricket experts across the globe.

What made India’s campaign especially remarkable was that they achieved this in the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with Jasprit Bumrah only being available for a limited number of games. Shubman Gill, leading a very young team, stepped up and produced one of the best batting performances we've seen in a long time. Gill amassed 754 runs in the series, topping the charts, and in the process, notched up four centuries in SENA countries after previously having none. England coach Brendon McCullum named him the Player of the Series.

“Incredible — Test cricket at its absolute best,” Kaneria said, as quoted by TOI. “There’s nothing that compares to the demands of Test cricket. It tests every ounce of a player's physical and mental toughness over five days. This young Indian team, without Rohit and Virat, performed unbelievably under Shubman Gill’s leadership. He carried the team on his shoulders and scored over 700 runs; it’s simply outstanding.”

Siraj hailed for resilience; Akash Deep’s knock called the turning point

Danish Kaneria didn’t stop at just lauding Gill. He also reserved high praise for Mohammed Siraj, whose resilience and commitment helped India fight back when all seemed lost. Despite being under pressure after a series of missteps, including a dropped catch at The Oval, Siraj roared back into form with a match-winning five-wicket haul. “Mohammed Siraj is a true lionheart. His commitment to the team is unmatched,” Kaneria said. “To play all five Tests, all of which went the distance, and to bowl with the same intensity shows his incredible fitness and passion. He carried the pace attack on his shoulders.”

Kaneria further credited key batting efforts in India’s series-leveling win. “The turning point, in my opinion, was Akash Deep’s 66. Those runs gave India a much-needed boost,” he remarked. “Jaiswal’s attacking century, along with late-order runs from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, played a major role in sealing the win.”

The Indian team has had a roller-coaster series in England. The hosts won the first and third Tests, India won the second, and the fourth ended in a draw. Now, with the series level, England looks set to win the fifth and final Test. India are close to losing the series, and veteran spinner R. Ashwin says one big reason is poor captaincy from Shubman Gill. On his YouTube channel “Ash Ki Baat,” Ashwin didn’t hold back. He pointed out key mistakes India made, especially in how they used their bowlers.

Throughout the series, there have been many moments that stood out. Speaking on this, India legend Ravichandran Ashwin talked about the team’s lack of game awareness. Ashwin said that India has not been the sharpest in the series, but he believes Shubman Gill’s decision-making as captain will improve over time.

Ashwin Points Out Lack of Game Awareness

Ashwin said that India have shown a lack of game awareness in this series, especially in tactical decisions on the field. “Coming back to the topic of spinners not being used, I feel there has been a lack of game awareness and, in many ways, our tactical thinking both on and off the field. This is the main reason why England are ahead in this series and India are behind. We haven’t been the sharpest,” he said.

He believes Shubman Gill will improve with time but added that missing key moments in a match is hurting the team. “Sometimes, if you feel you play spin well, you don’t bring in your own spinners at the right time. And when that happens, spinners become a defensive option instead of an attacking one,” Ashwin explained.

Ashwin gave a specific example from Day 4 of the final Test, when England batter Harry Brook was scoring freely. He said that was the moment to bring in Washington Sundar to slow the runs.

“You could’ve had a spinner from one end and a fast bowler from the other. But we missed that chance,” he added.

He also said it’s not clear whether these calls are made on the field or come from the team management. “Making these mistakes is a huge gap. We don’t know whether the message is going from outside to the middle. We don’t know the dressing room talks. But in today’s day and age, these mistakes can definitely be avoided,” Ashwin said.

England in Control After Day 4

Ashwin’s comments came after India showed some fight on Day 4 but still allowed England to get close to victory. Joe Root and Harry Brook both scored centuries and stitched together a 195-run partnership, taking the game away from India. Brook smashed 111 off 98 balls, while Root made 105.

India did fight back after tea, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna taking wickets and slowing the scoring. The match was stopped due to bad light and rain, with England at 339/6, just 35 runs away from a record win.

India showed great fight and spirit on the final day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford to stop England from winning. Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Shubman Gill scored brilliant centuries, while KL Rahul played a steady knock of 90 runs. Their efforts helped India save the match and avoid defeat.

Shubman Gill started the day with a calm and confident hundred. KL Rahul supported him well with a valuable 90. But the key moment came when Jadeja and Sundar came together. Both batted with great patience and didn’t let the England bowlers take control. Jadeja stayed not out on 107, once again showing how important he is to the team.

Washington Sundar, who came in to bat at number 5, played one of the best innings of his career. He took his time, stayed focused, and reached his first-ever Test century in the last over of the day. He scored 101 runs from 206 balls. As soon as Sundar completed his century, both teams shook hands and ended the match in a draw.

There was some confusion after the game, as some thought India had taken a 3-1 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. But the official series score stands at 2-1 in England’s favour after this drawn Test. Still, India’s strong performance on the last day won the hearts of fans and has set up a thrilling end to the series.

Shubman Gill Leads India to Historic Win at Edgbaston

India made history by winning their first-ever Test match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, beating England in style on Sunday, July 6. Captain Shubman Gill led the way with the bat and gave a perfect example of leading from the front. Before the match, he had told his teammates that once a batter is set, they should try to score 50 or 60 extra runs and he did just that, smashing 430 runs in the match out of India’s total of 1,014, their highest in Test cricket.

There was a lot of talk about India’s team combination before the second Test. Many questioned the changes, but now those doubts don’t matter. Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir were proved right. Their decision to include Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar helped strengthen the batting, and bringing in Akash Deep turned out to be a masterstroke he took 10 wickets in the match.

But above all, it was Shubman Gill’s match. He batted beautifully, dominated the English bowlers, and made it look easy. He played every shot in the book drives, flicks, sweeps and left England with no answers. With this performance, he also became the Indian captain with the highest individual score in a Test match.

This was a special win. India had never won a Test at Edgbaston before seven losses and a draw in 58 years. But this time, they not only won, they outplayed England in every department. They scored big in the first innings with 587 runs, making England’s 407 look below par.

India’s fast bowlers made the difference. Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj bowled with pace and energy in both innings. The gap between the two bowling attacks was clear. England had done well in the first Test by finishing off the Indian tail quickly, but in this game, India hit back hard.
Everything started at the toss. Ben Stokes decided to bowl first, hoping England could chase later. But Gill made sure that decision backfired after his fiery innings in second innings. From the first session, he batted with confidence and control. He scored all around the ground and made sure India stayed on top.

Other batters stepped up too Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and KL Rahul all made useful contributions. India’s deep batting line-up made a big difference. Even when England showed some fight with a strong 303-run stand between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, Akash Deep broke through by dismissing Brook and ended their hopes.

England looked like they might catch up at one point, but then they fell apart and ended up 180 runs short. Their lower-order batters didn’t add many runs, which was unexpected. In the second innings, England’s bowlers were tired and couldn’t stop India from scoring 427 more, with good innings from Shubman, Pant, Jadeja, and Rahul. England faced a massive target of 608 runs in just 108 overs, which was impossible to chase. In the end, India won easily and proved they are one of the best teams in the world.

Shubman Gill Leads India to Big Win at Edgbaston

India, led by Shubman Gill, beat England by a huge 336 runs to level the five-match Test series 1-1. Shubman was the star with the bat, and the fast bowlers did a great job in both innings. India Batted first, India put up a big score of 587 runs with Shubman scoring a brilliant 269. The bowlers then bowled well, with Mohammed Siraj taking six wickets and Akash Deep taking four to dismiss England for 407.

In the second innings, Shubman scored another big hundred with 161 runs.
Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja also hit fifties as India made 427, setting England a massive target of 608. England never really looked like chasing it down and lost by 336 runs. Akash Deep, who missed out on five wickets in the first innings, took six in the second to complete ten wickets in the match. Siraj, Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Prasidh Krishna also picked up one wicket each.

With this win, Shubman Gill became the first Asian captain to lead his team to a Test victory at Edgbaston, breaking England’s strong record at the ground against Asian teams.
He led by example, almost scoring a triple-century in the first innings and getting another century in the second.

Akash Deep’s Magic Ball Gets Joe Root Out

Akash Deep bowled a brilliant delivery to dismiss Joe Root late on day four of the Edgbaston Test. With England facing a huge target, Akash Deep produced a perfect ball that completely surprised England’s best batter.

He went wide of the crease to change the angle, making Root think it would come in. But the ball moved away just enough after pitching. Root tried to play it but was beaten, and his off stump was knocked back.
He looked shocked as the bails flew.

Akash Deep didn’t celebrate wildly. He just pointed to his team badge and toward the dressing room, showing he belongs at this level. Earlier, India scored 427 runs in their second innings, setting England a massive target of 608 runs.

Shubman Gill led the way with a superb 161. This is one of the biggest targets ever set in Test cricket. For comparison, the highest successful run chase is 418 runs by West Indies in 2003. England will need something truly special to even get close.

Shubman Gill Creates History with a Record-Breaking Show at Edgbaston

India’s captain Shubman Gill played one of the greatest Test matches of all time against England at Edgbaston. The young skipper scored a breathtaking 269 in the first innings and followed it up with another brilliant knock of 161 in the second.

With this, Gill became the first player in Test history to score both a double century and a 150 in the same match. He also became only the second batter ever to score 150+ in both innings of a Test, joining Australian legend Allan Border, who scored 150 and 153\* against Pakistan in 1980.

Gill’s consistency in this series has been outstanding. After Rishabh Pant scored hundreds in both innings of the first Test, Gill matched the feat in this game. He also became the eighth Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, and only the third Indian captain to do so, after Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.
Gill’s total of 430 runs in the match is the second-highest in Test history just behind Graham Gooch’s 456 runs for England in 1990.

In the second innings, Gill stitched a vital 110-run stand with Pant, who made a quick 65.
Gill played smart cricket, starting patiently and then accelerating later in the day. He brought up his century in 129 balls and reached 150 in just 155 balls. He hit 13 fours and 8 sixes before getting out for 161.

Ravindra Jadeja missed his hundred by just 11 runs. He got out for 89 after facing a tough bouncer from Josh Tongue. The England fast bowler bowled it short and sharp. Jadeja tried to play it but could only glove it to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

It was a big moment because Jadeja and Shubman Gill had put together a huge 203-run partnership. Jadeja hit 10 fours and a six in his strong, steady innings. Even though he got out just before lunch on Day 2 in Birmingham, his knock helped India get into a strong position.

Shubman Gill played really well too. He smashed a big sweep shot for six off Shoaib Bashir to bring up the 200-run stand. At lunch, he was still unbeaten on 168, looking calm and in control.

Washington Sundar looked a bit shaky against the bouncers but with Gill set, India will hope to build a big lead. England will be hoping for a quick collapse, just like they saw in Leeds.
Jadeja’s dismissal was a setback for India, but his big partnership with Gill has put them in a strong position. With Gill still batting confidently, India will look to keep building their lead and make things tough for England in this crucial Test.

Shubman Gill Creates History with 150+ in England Test

On Thursday (July 3), Shubman Gill made history by becoming only the second Indian captain to score 150 or more runs in a Test innings in England. He reached this landmark at Edgbaston in Birmingham during the first innings of the second Test. Gill got to 150 with a single on his 263rd ball.

The first Indian captain to do this was Mohammad Azharuddin, who scored 179 runs in Manchester back in 1990. If Gill scores at least 30 more runs, he will break Azharuddin’s record for the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test in England.
So far, only Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid have scored double centuries for India in England. Gill will be hoping to join them.

If he reaches 200 runs, he will be the first Indian captain to score a double century in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). Right now, Virat Kohli is the only Indian captain with a double century outside India. He scored 200 runs against the West Indies at North Sound in 2016.
