As the cricketing world prepared for the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023, India’s roster selection procedure surprised fans and commentators alike. While the chosen few were lauded and scrutinised, noticeable exclusions raised eyebrows and prompted nationwide debates.

This article will look at the players who should have made a mark on the Indian squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023, which Sri Lanka and Pakistan will host.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan

It is a no-brainer why Shikhar Dhawan is called the Mr. ICC, thanks to his wholesome cricketing display as a left-hand opener. But, it is indeed an amusing pointer not to find him in the squad of a major tournament like the Asia Cup, especially after his exclusion from the forthcoming Asian Games, which would be held at the end of September in China. The selectors may have opted for younger talents, as Dhawan’s recent form has been inconsistent. But ultimately, a little touch of experience would play a pivotal role in the team’s performance.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Evidently, the Indian team has provided some quality spinmeisters, and they have come up to their predominance. Still, it was a surprise to witness Yuzvendra Chahal’s exclusion from the squad. The crafty leg-spinner has been a match-winner for India. His exclusion might be due to the emergence of other spin options or form concerns. With the likes of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja as their spin options, having an experienced right-arm leg spinner in the squad would be suitable.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young sensation from Mumbai, has shown glimpses of brilliance. His exclusion could be due to his limited international experience, but his time will come. Through a phenomenal U19 World Cup campaign in 2020, Yashasvi made a massive statement to everyone that he had arrived in the IPL and national teams. Cricketing legends like Tom Moody and Sourav have highly anticipated his ODI debut, thanks to his dream start by donning the Indian colours in the Test & T20I format from the West Indies tour, where he had scalped averages of 88.69 & 33.0, respectively. A bit of grooming and experience would create a game changer in the batter’s aspect of the Indian cricket team.
