Virat Kohli scripted another historical record during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala. The RCB superstar became the first batter in IPL history to score 5,500 runs specifically as an opener for a single franchise.

Before the match against PBKS, Kohli needed only seven runs to complete the record. He reached the milestone in style by hitting a six off Azmatullah Omarzai. While players like Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner have also crossed 5,500 IPL runs as openers, they did it while playing for different teams. Kohli, however, achieved it only for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

This latest record added another big achievement to Kohli’s IPL career. He already holds the unique record of becoming the first batter in IPL history to score more than 1,000 runs against four different teams - Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders. The milestone once again showed why Kohli is one of the greatest players in IPL history.

Virat Kohli’s latest record proves his incredible consistency over the years in the IPL. He now has 1183 runs against Punjab Kings, 1174 runs against Chennai Super Kings, 1172 runs against Delhi Capitals, and 1161 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders. No other batter in IPL history has managed to dominate four teams in this manner.

Scoring 1000 runs against even one IPL team takes years of consistency and performance. Kohli has been able to replicate that feat against four different teams making this record more special. His adaptability to different bowling attacks and conditions is what sets him apart from the rest of the batters.

Many IPL legends like David Warner and Rohit Sharma have dominated one or two teams during their careers. But no one has been as dominant across multiple teams as Kohli. His record has now placed him in a league of his own in IPL history.

Kohli's milestone night in Dharamsala — how his record knock set up RCB's playoff push against PBKS

Virat Kohli’s iconic milestone night originally came during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2024 clash against Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. In a must-win match for RCB’s playoff hopes, Kohli delivered a stunning innings of 92 runs off just 47 balls. He smashed 7 fours and 6 sixes and attacked the PBKS bowlers from the very beginning.

Even after a rain break stopped the match for some time, Kohli returned with the same aggressive approach. His explosive knock enabled the RCB to put a massive 241/7 on the board and then register a comfortable 60-run win over Punjab Kings, keeping their playoff hopes alive. In that innings, Kohli also became the first batter in IPL history to score 1000+ runs against PBKS.

Kohli once again created history during the IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala. The RCB star became the first batter in IPL history to score 5,500 runs as an opener for a single franchise. He completed the milestone in style by hitting a six off Azmatullah Omarzai.

Kohli continued his good form and scored 58 runs off 37 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes to give RCB a strong start. Venkatesh Iyer later smashed an unbeaten 73 off 40 balls, while the other batters also added useful runs as Royal Challengers Bengaluru finished with a big total of 222/4 in 20 overs against Punjab Kings. If RCB win this match, they will qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs and become the first team to seal their playoff spot.

From 1000 vs one team to 1000 vs four — why Kohli's IPL consistency is unlike anything cricket has ever seen

One of the biggest reasons behind Kohli’s success is his fitness and long career at the top level. Since 2008, he has played only for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and has adapted to every phase of IPL cricket. Even after more than 15 years in the tournament, he continues to improve his strike rate and batting approach.

Modern T20 cricket usually sees players dominate only certain teams or conditions. However, Kohli has always been a run-scoring machine against every big team in different grounds and seasons where he has played. His ability to perform under pressure and maintain hunger for runs makes him different from most modern cricketers. Kohli’s consistency across formats has also kept him among the top players in the ICC rankings

With more than 9100 IPL runs and multiple historic records already to his name, Kohli continues to redefine greatness in T20 cricket. His latest achievement against PBKS once again showed why fans still proudly call him “King Kohli.”

As of writing: Royal Challengers Bengaluru are 188/3 in 17.1 overs against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala. Virat Kohli scored 58 off 37 balls before getting out, while Venkatesh Iyer is batting strongly on 65 off 32 deliveries. RCB are currently in a strong position.
