When Bangladesh put their feet on Australia after more than two decades for the two-match Test series, no one expected them to earn a single victory. But the boundary from Mominul Haque delivered them the nine-wicket win in the small chase of 57 runs during the first Test of the series at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. 

It becomes the second win for the Tigers against the Aussies in the longest format of the game, as they beat the Australian side for the very first time since 2017 in Dhaka. They would now hope to continue the superb show in 2026 and earn the series victory against the Pat Cummins-led side. 

The winning moment: How Bangladesh sealed their first-ever Test win on Australian soil

Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s five-wicket haul in the second innings of the Test match set the chase of 57 runs for the Bangladesh side, who lost their centurion of the first innings, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, for a five-ball duck. But the experience of Mominul Haque came to the rescue.

Australia threw all the bowlers into the attack. But none of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon were able to break through the Bangladesh batting line-up. Later, Mominul finally finished the chase in style by slapping the short ball into the deep backward point fence for a boundary.

Bangladesh set the encounter by posting 426 runs in the first innings. That was where they made the massive difference by taking the lead by more than 200 runs.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and co. set up the win with a dominant all-round performance

Australia, opting to bat first, were bundled out for 198 runs in the first innings as their former captain, Steve Smith, smashed 71 runs off seven boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 65.14, while the rest of the batters failed to convert their starts into big scores. Hasan Mahmud returned with figures of 6/55 in 17 overs, including three maiden overs.

Bangladesh recorded a massive score of 426 runs in their first innings thanks to the 101-run knock of Tanzid Tamim along with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Miraz’s respective half-centuries. In reply, the hosts were blown away for 284 with Cameron Green dashing 104 runs.

Bangladesh, in the fourth innings, completed the 57-run chase by nine wickets and took the lead by 1-0 margin.
