Dinesh Karthik, The Wicket-Keeper Who Stayed Moving in the Sidelines

Dinesh Karthik has been a common name in Indian Cricket. He’s been around for as long as ever, having missed only two games throughout his IPL career. The two came later in his career as well after representing each side he’s been a part of so consistently for 16 years.
Always a fidgety batter at the crease, Dinesh Karthik and his moves have had captains thinking while he bats. He started as the man of the match in India’s first-ever T20I and has been constantly involved, being one of the few Indian batters from the previous generation to innovatively access regions behind the wicket.
His international career finishes with 180 caps, having represented India during the MS Dhoni era. His inclusions mostly came when MS Dhoni was unavailable after a stage or as a specialist batter, indicating that he had the batting credentials to fit into the side for his batting alone. However, like Sanju Samson today, Dinesh Karthik‘s opportunities were branched out.
He’d often get a game where the top-order does the work leaving little for him to do and his appearances would usually be spread out. When he does get the opportunity to bat though it is usually in a pressure situation or a scenario where he has to hit or go hence leading to low scores and lower averages. As a result, his career has seen a lot of waiting while his chances have come with situational challenges with regards to the situation he walks into while batting.
Interestingly, despite being four years younger than Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik made his debut a year before. His first Test came in 2004 and he continued to represent India after MS Dhoni retired as well, having last played in Blue in 2022. He outlasted MS Dhoni in both Tests and T20Is while both went out of ODIs together after the Manchester heartbreak in 2019. In IPL too, if Dhoni decides to follow Karthik into retirement we could see Karthik outlast Dhoni by one game as well.
The in-between periods though was where Karthik missed out and his rival capitalized. DK though stands as one of the IPLs and Indian Crickets greatest survivors. He was a part of each season and with each season he has grown. Unlike other stalwarts in IPL though, Dinesh Karthik has moved around a lot, representing six franchises in total. Dinesh Karthik though has proved that he has the skills needed for T20, evident considering he was India’s first player of the match in T20Is.
He transformed his career multiple times with possibly the best transformation coming in 2022. Understanding that he is the best fit for the last five overs, Dinesh Karthik often waited for the right moment to come out. His death overs game though was nowhere near to brute force. Instead, Dinesh Karthik chose to make use of his light feet and flexibility. He used the scoop and reverse sweep so much in the last two years while also honing his famous inside-out stroke as well.
He is one of the most prolific scorers over third-man and this is a change that came after Dinesh Karthik crossed 38. His numbers against pace and spin alike were pretty good. So good were his performances that there stood an outside chance for Karthik to make yet another possible Final comeback to the Indian Team. As it was throughout his career though, Dinesh Karthik had to contend with some other strong candidates and fell just outside the squad yet again.
The same story took place with Karthik missing out to other keepers. It was MS Dhoni, Parthiv Patel, and Wriddhiman Saha then and Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson now. The change in competition though indicates his longevity as he now walks away after years of moving around. He goes away silently after staying in the shadows throughout his career.
