India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill, is expected to get the vice-captaincy role for the national side during the upcoming T20I format of the Asia Cup 2025. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee is likely to sit on August 19 or 20 once the Centre of Excellence’s Sports Science submits all the medical status of the players.

It includes a vital update on their T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, who has started net practice at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, as the reports have claimed. Jasprit Bumrah, the premier pacer, is also set to be part of the tournament.

India likely to drop Yashasvi Jaiswal from Asia Cup 2025 squad

Gill had recently smashed over 750 runs in England during the five-match Test series. His leadership impressed the selectors, and being the youngster, he would get a nice exposure and could gain experience for the future. The top five are expected to be around Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav.

“Abhishek is currently the top-ranked T20 batter in the ICC rankings. Sanju was brilliant with both bat and gloves last season. Shubman had a strong IPL, and his Test form is incredible, but fitting everyone into the top order will be a big challenge. The BCCI source, as reported by PTI.

That means, at the top, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and KL Rahul will need to wait for their chances to be back in the T20I side. Rahul is their first-choice wicket-keeper batter in the 50-over format, but he hasn’t cemented his spot yet in T20Is.

Sanju Samson will be the primary wicket-keeper batter as the race for the second slot for the glovework will be between Dhruv Jurel and Jitesh Sharma. The latter had been part of the format for the national side and showed his skills in the IPL to shoulder the responsibility.

Shivam Dube is also going to make his notable comeback in the side after his partial absence from the home series against England and could step in as the back-up all-rounder to Hardik Pandya. Nitish Kumar Reddy is expected to miss the squad.

Jasprit Bumrah to return for Asia Cup 2025

Bumrah will be the leader of the pace attack in the competition. But that means, with the home Test series against the West Indies looming in early October, the management is likely to rest him for the two games. He, then, can feature in the two-match Test series at home against South Africa.

Arshdeep Singh played a crucial role in India becoming the champions of the T20 World Cup 2024 and will be the second seamer of the side. The third choice will be between Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna. The Bengaluru-born picked up 25 wickets in the last IPL season, while Rana had already played in the shortest format for India.

Spin will play a crucial role on the surfaces in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Washington Sundar and Axar Patel will be the two spin all-rounders of the side. The latter has shown his skills to bat at the top order if they lose a few wickets early in the game, as he did against the Proteas during the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados.

Kuldeep Yadav, who missed the entire England Test series despite the desire of the fans to get the left-arm wrist spinner into the side, will be back for the Asia Cup 2025, along with Varun Chakravarthy. The Tamil Nadu spinner has picked up 33 wickets in 18 innings at an average of 14.57 and an economy rate of just over seven.

Just a few weeks are to go before the curtain raiser of the Asia Cup takes place on September 10, as the most-anticipated clash between the Blue Brigade and Pakistan will take place four days later at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. All the games will be played at the Dubai International Stadium and Abu Dhabi across the country.

The final of the tournament will be played just three days before the opening Test of the two-match series against the Roston Chase-led side in Ahmedabad. That will create a little issue for the Test-bound players to be fully prepared for the series. The second and final red-ball encounter will then be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

India is both the official hosts and the defending champions of the event after they claimed the ODI-format title in 2023, beating Sri Lanka in the final.

India’s probable Asia Cup 2025 squad

Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel.
