Shubman Gill is set to become India’s next ODI captain and will take over from Rohit Sharma when the time comes. This could happen after India’s three-match ODI series in Australia in October, as Rohit’s future in international cricket beyond that tour seems uncertain. However, given Rohit’s experience and class, rushing the change could be risky. Whenever the baton is passed, Gill is next in line, and currently, there is no other contender.

Gill will be in action as India prepares for the 2025 Asia Cup, which will be held in the UAE starting on September 9. The team returns to international cricket after a break following the recently finished England Test tour.

The tournament will also mark Shubman Gill’s return to the T20I side. He is part of the 15-member squad and has been named vice-captain. Gill last played a T20I before the 2024 T20 World Cup. He impressed in IPL 2025, scoring 650 runs at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87.
