The Mumbai Indians (MI) are one of the most successful teams in Indian Premier League history, having won the joint-most titles (5 times). However, the franchise failed to live up to its lofty reputation the previous season, with the Mumbai side finishing last in the ten-team points table. With a mega-auction, the Mumbai Indians will have an excellent opportunity to overhaul their team and strengthen it with the essential recruits. Because it is a mega-auction, most players from each arsenal will have to be released, with only four players eligible to be kept. From a solid and young MI lineup, these are the three most likely Mumbai Indians retentions for the next 2025 IPL season.

Jasprit Bumrah

The talismanic Indian pacer is one of the world's top fast bowlers right now, and Mumbai will not make the mistake of losing such a rare talent. Bumrah has often proven his worth, and his adaptability further adds to his credentials.

Bumrah can bowl in both the powerplay and the death overs, making crucial breakthroughs or even controlling run flow to put pressure on the opponent. Despite MI's poor performance last season, Bumrah remained among the top wicket-takers, finishing third with 20 scalps from 13 games.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya enjoyed a homecoming when the franchise opted to re-sign him from Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Also, the MI management handed over the captaincy to Pandya from Rohit Sharma, signalling that they trust the all-rounder with the leadership position in the future.

Pandya, therefore, becomes an automatic choice. Though he had a forgettable 2023 edition in every aspect, his bat and ball skills are well known, and he demonstrated them throughout India's successful T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. Pandya will try to emulate his IPL success this season and turn around MI's fortunes from the previous season when they finished last.

Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma is a promising star in the MI ranks. The Mumbai Indians acquired the powerful left-hander for INR 1.7 crore in the IPL 2022 super auctions, and he has since become a regular in the team. Tilak Varma's big-hitting ability allows him to play the finisher position, adding significant firepower to the Mumbai Indians' middle order.

Tilak had a successful IPL 2024 season, scoring 416 runs at an average of 41.6 and an excellent strike rate of 149.64. Tilak's middle-overs stats are what set him apart. He has an average of 53.86 and a strike rate of 140.41, making him the team's representative of middle-order batting and an effective game-finisher.
