Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been making heads turn for a while. He announced himself last season, launching Shardul Thakur over the fence, and has since taken on seasoned bowlers. Last season, though, he never got ot play the genius in Jasprit Bumrah. Starting with a fifteen-ball fifty this season, that was the match-up that would likely differentiate Sooryavanshi the slogger and Sooryavanshi the batter.

The Wait and Lead-up

Rain tested the patience of those waiting for the battle. Chahar could have ended it as well in the first over but instead was taken for 22 runs by Yashashvi Jaiswal. The face-off did come in the 2nd over. Jasprit Bumrah vs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The last time Bumrah faced a free-flowing youngster was back in Melbourne when Sam Konstas took him on. He briefly had Bumrah rattled with some aggressive ramps, but Bumrah was quick to put him in his place in the following innings.

It was another youngster this time from his very Bumrah's very own country. No match-up history and a case of a youngster who does not know respect vs a Master of his craft at his finest. Cleanest slate possible. 32-year-old Jasprit Bumrah bowling to 15 year old, less than half of Bumrah's age.

Sooryavanshi, in his season and a few games at the tournament already has a strong reputation for hitting the ball big. He has 35 sixes in 171 deliveries faced in the tournament. That is almost a six in every 5 deliveries. In contrast. Yashashvi Jaiswal, a young dasher himself average a six every fifteen balls. A decade apart and a stark contrast among two aggressors. His hitting ability does not surprise much anymore particularly after the year he has had playing in other tournaments domestically.

The Battle

The genius of Bumrah, though, is a challenge of its own. Charging in for the first ball of the second over, Sooryavanshi was quick in taking him on, flicking him with ease over the boundary. With due respect, though, the first Bumrah delivery was far from his best. No attempt to swing or move the ball, not the yorker, bouncer or slower delivery. It was right in the slot, testing the ego of a youngster, and the youngster took it on.

Bumrah is back in business for the next one. Change of pace, single conceded, and back to business. The battle did not end. Fourth ball, Bumrah went for a change of pace again, but Sooryavanshi was ready with another maximum. He took on Bumrah at his elements and came out on top. It was a battle that lasted 5 balls but it gave a massive insight into what this kid is made of.

Two sixes and three balls later Bumrah was going in damage control mode. The best bowler in the country and possibly the world was left scrambling to keep the young boy under control. The battle took three hours to come to the fore, and the wait was worth it. While Sooryavanshi has announced himself many times previously, this battle was a telling announcement of Sooryavanshi to the world. He did what many 15-year-olds could only dream of doing. Taking Jasprit Bumrah on and coming out on top. The legend himself could not help but smile as carnage unfolded. The battle was brief and worth the witness as we waited with an eager eye on what this kid could produce.
