1. “Because my highest score is there” – Shubman Gill reveals his favourite England ground after 2025 Test series

Shubman Gill became India’s Test captain for the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. He led India to a thrilling 2-2 draw in the five-match series. Every match went to the final day. Gill also scored the most runs, making 754 in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, with four centuries.

In the podcast, Gill was asked about his favourite cricket ground in England. He chose Birmingham, where he scored his highest Test score: 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. This helped India win by 336 runs, their first-ever win at Birmingham. Gill said:

“I would say Birmingham now because my highest Test score is there. But honestly, when I was in that moment, I felt so focused that I didn’t realize it until the match ended. It was our first win on that ground, India had never won there before.”

He added, “Before the match, a journalist asked me about India’s chances because we had never won there. I just said, ‘It doesn’t matter, it’s my first time here, let’s see.’ It felt amazing.”

2. India Test captain names his cricketing inspirations

Gill shared his cricketing idols: Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. He said:

“I had two idols. The first was Sachin. He was my dad’s favourite, and I got into cricket because of him. Around 2011–2013, I started learning more about cricket, not just skills but also mental and tactical parts.”

“I also loved watching Virat bhai, Virat Kohli. He had so much passion and hunger for the game. You can learn skills, but hunger is something you either have or don’t. He had it, and it inspired me.”

3. “That moment and that innings” – Gill reflects on the turning point of his career

Gill recalled a game at age 11 during an under-23 fast bowlers’ camp. He scored an unbeaten 90-odd, which made him realise cricket could be his career. He said:

“I realised this could be my career when I was 11. There was a camp with under-23 fast bowlers, and I was only 11. They were a batsman short, so my friend Kushpreet asked the coach if I could play. At first, they said I was too young, but then they let me play.”

“I batted at number seven or eight. Our first few batsmen got out quickly, and I scored 90-something not out. That moment gave me confidence and made me realize I’m meant to do this.”

4. “Dad made me wake up at 3 a.m.” – Challenges in his cricket journey

Gill spoke about early struggles. His father had a disagreement with his academy coach, so Gill had to practice alone at 3 a.m. every day. He said:

“My dad had a falling out with the academy coach and kicked us out. The coach had sessions from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. My dad woke me up at 3 a.m. to practice before school. Then I’d practice again after school.”

“We did this for a few years. It was hard waking up at 3 a.m., but I’m grateful my dad kept pushing me.”

5. Gill explains his “bow-down” celebration

Gill also explained his famous bow-down celebration. He said it was not planned but happened naturally during his first international century in 2022 in Zimbabwe, Harare.

“The celebration just came naturally. I never planned it. When I scored my first century in Harare, I did it in the moment, and it just stuck.”

Gill is set to play again when India face Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday, September 14, in Dubai.
