A disappointing tournament: Buttler explains England loss

Jos Buttler has no clear idea why his team is having a disastrous World Cup. He also said that he finds it disturbing to see the team underperform despite having a lot of talent in the squad.

Buttler after England’s loss

England could score just 156 and Sri Lanka chased down the same within 26 overs with 8 wickets in hand. Buttler said after the loss, “It’s incredibly tough. A disappointing tournament. We’ve not just been short of our best, but by a very long way. As captain, you feel that a lot. I’m disappointed for myself and all of the boys that we’ve not given a good account of ourselves.”

He added, “That’s the question we’ve been trying to answer. There is no clear answer at the moment. If there was one golden nugget that we were obviously not doing then we would try to pick that up. I can’t fault the guys’ efforts, we’re just playing a long way short of our best. It starts from the front. As captain, you want to lead from the front and play well. I’ve been a long way short of my best.”

Buttler talks about the biggest frustration

He also said, “There’s a lot of really experienced cricketers, tough cricketers, in the room who have been through a lot. They’re confident people. You don’t become a bad player or a bad team overnight – that’s the biggest frustration.” He concluded, “We’ve been so far short of the standards that we set ourselves and for no particularly obvious reason. I can’t put my finger on it at the moment. Selection is something you’d like to be consistent with. But that’s not our problem at the moment. Performances as individuals, and as a team – whoever has been on the field during this tournament – has been short of what we set ourselves.”

England, the defending champions look totally out of track in the ongoing World Cup 2023. Buttler said, “Whatever happens, going forward in this tournament, we want to get back to playing some really good cricket in the rest of our matches. What will be will be.”
