The Bengal and Delhi Capitals (DC) batter, Abishek Porel, has been arrested on August 11 after a medical student accused him of being engaged in sexual relations with her under the false promise of getting married, assaulting her, and confining her. The batter, who had denied all the allegations in the past, was arrested in Emami City. 

Porel has been arrested on several charges, including rape, causing death or resulting in the persistent vegetative state of the victim of rape, sexual intercourse, assault, and cheating. The star player was arrested after the Calcutta High Court directed the police to trace him.

Hooghly police detain Porel for hours of questioning before formal arrest and court production

The student moved the Calcutta High Court on July 14, as Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya ordered the police to seize Porel’s digital devices. The police seized a storage pen drive containing the potential evidence.

“Accused persons are required to be apprehended for seizure of electronic devices lying with them so that data stored therein cannot be shared with others. Concerned police authorities are directed to continue with their endeavour to apprehend respondent nos. 6 & 7 and to make seizure of devices so that obnoxious data stored therein shall not be further disseminated.” The court observed.

After the High Court order, Hooghly Superintendent of Police visited the police station and held consultations with the local police officers and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Singh Mahapatra.

It was June 23 when a medical student from Karnataka, along with her mother, filed a complaint at a police station in Hooghly, where the student reckoned that she met the India player in January three years ago. They had a three-and-a-half-year relationship, with discussions of marriage involving both families. 

She reported receiving threatening and abusive calls, including messages sent through the associate’s Instagram account and third-party phone numbers. She also alleged that the player recorded their intimate moments without any consent.

Porel has been one of the vital members for the future of the Indian side. In the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for the Delhi Capitals, he smashed 108 runs in four innings with one fifty. He crossed the 300-run mark in two successive seasons of the IPL in 2025 and 2024 for the Delhi Capitals (DC).
