West Indies put up a strong display against Zimbabwe in their Super 8 match of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. Batting first, the Caribbean team scored a huge 254/6, leaving a target of 255. It was one of the highest totals in World Cup history. Zimbabwe were left with a huge challenge under the lights in Mumbai.

The big breakthrough came in the third over of the chase. On 2.1 overs, Akeal Hosein struck with the very first ball of his second over. Bowling from around the wicket, he delivered a full ball drifting in on the leg-stump line. Brian Bennett tried to clear his front leg for a big slog across the line.

However, the ball pitched and spun away sharply, beating the outside edge. It crashed into the off stump, sending the bails flying. Bennett was dismissed for 5 runs off 5 balls (1 four), and the strike rate of 100.00 did not matter as his unbeaten run in the 2026 World Cup finally ended. Hosein even pointed him back toward the pavilion.

Bennett’s Historic Streak Comes to an End

The defeat put up the shock that Bennett had not been out in the 2026 World Cup before this match. He came into the game with an incredible average of 180. But this time, he managed only 5 runs from 5 balls, including one boundary. Hosein’s wicket was part of a dramatic phase where West Indies picked up two wickets in two balls.

The strong bowling effort followed a historic batting display by West Indies. Shimron Hetmyer smashed 85 off just 34 balls, while captain Rovman Powell scored 59 from 35 deliveries. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran also added quick runs at the start. Although Richard Ngarava (2/47) and Blessing Muzarabani (2/42) picked up wickets, Zimbabwe’s bowlers could not stop the flow of runs, and Bennett’s early dismissal made the chase even more difficult.

As of writing, Zimbabwe are 48/3 after 6.1 overs, needing 207 runs from 83 balls, with West Indies firmly in control of the chase.
