Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has made a surprising revelation about Virat Kohli and his unsuccessful return to the Indian team after a leg injury in 2017. Speaking on the Baith & Bol podcast with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra, Mishra claimed that both Anil Kumble and Kohli had assured him that he would get another chance once he regained full fitness.

However, Mishra said those assurances did not lead to a comeback, and he was left without an explanation about his selection prospects. His comments about Amit Mishra and Virat Kohli have drawn attention, particularly his claim that Kohli stopped responding to his calls and messages after initially assuring him of a return.

What did Virat Kohli promise Amit Mishra after his 2017 injury?

Mishra’s international career took a difficult turn in February 2017 when he suffered a leg injury during a T20 International against England in Bengaluru. At the time, Anil Kumble was India’s head coach, and Mishra said Kumble reassured him that he would return to the team after recovering.

Recalling his conversation with Kumble, Mishra said, “When I was leaving after getting injured, Anil Kumble was the coach. So I told Anil Bhai, I said, 'Anil Bhai. Don't worry. As soon as you get fit, you automatically... you will come back.” Mishra said the coach’s words gave him hope that his place in the Indian team remained possible once he was fit again.

After Kumble’s tenure ended and Kohli became captain, Mishra said he approached the Indian batter to ask about his future with the team. He believed Kohli’s response was equally encouraging and that he still had a chance to return after completing his recovery.

Mishra recalled Kohli telling him, “Brother, what needs to be done?' He said, 'You don't worry. Get fully fit and comfortable, and you are there [in the team].'” The assurance led Mishra to believe that regaining full fitness would give him an opportunity to return to international cricket.

“Absolutely no update”: Why Amit Mishra says Kohli never replied

Once he recovered, Mishra said he approached Kohli again to ask about his selection prospects. According to Mishra, Kohli told him he would provide an update within seven to ten days, but that response never came.

Recalling what happened next, Mishra said, “So, I went to him. I asked, 'Brother, what's the situation?' So he said, 'I will let you know in a week to ten days.' Then brother, one week passed, two weeks passed, three weeks passed, there was absolutely no update from him. I called him... so, he did not pick up the call. I messaged him, but there was no reply.” This is the basis of the Amit Mishra Kohli did not pick up calls revelation that has attracted attention.

Mishra said he tried calling Kohli several more times and sent messages but received no response. He added, “I called again, he did not answer. I called twice more, still nothing... so I also let it go. Then I thought, 'Brother, what can we do?' When someone does not want you, what can you do? When players who got more severely injured than you, and were injured for much longer made their comebacks... yet, I have never received any answer to this day.” Mishra said he was disappointed that he never received clarity about why he did not return to the national team.
