In the previous encounter between the two sides of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the Chennai Super Kings bowled out the Mumbai Indians quite cheaply and grabbed a massive victory, riding on the heroics from Akeal Hossein and Sanju Samson. Their reverse fixture at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk was expected to be another superb game.

The visiting captain, Hardik Pandya, won the toss and decided to bat first on a dry surface, which they reckoned would get slow heading into the second innings of the fixture. The Chennai Super Kings captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, wanted to bat first, but he didn’t mind chasing on that 22-yard.

Will Jacks dismissed for 01 vs CSK in IPL 2026

In their last game at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai enjoyed the strong opening partnership between Ryan Rickelton, who went on to celebrate his century, and Will Jacks, who contributed equally for the franchise with some big shots inside the powerplay.

Having opted to bat first on a good surface, the expectation was to see the same stand going through the business and punishing the Chennai bowlers, who have lacked a little bit of confidence in the last few games of the edition.

But Mumbai experienced a tough start with the bat, getting only one run in the first seven balls. And eventually, the pressure of the runs got the better of Will Jacks, who was dismissed for a single off five balls.

It was a fullish delivery from Anshul Kamboj as Jacks stepped out of his crease and backed away to swing his willow across the line. The ball moved away a bit off the deck as the ball flew over the backward point off the outer part of the bat. Ramkrishna Ghosh, running from the deep backward point region, grabbed an easy catch.

Mumbai hit more sixes than boundaries inside powerplay

Six sixes were nailed into the stands by the Mumbai Indians batters in comparison to one boundary. Rickelton was the main architect for it with 36 runs in 21 balls as the five-time champions finished with 57/1 in the powerplay, after a scratchy start.

Chennai could have got Naman Dhir’s wicket had Shivam Dube kept the ball in his hands through the catch. But he failed. Although the luck was in Noor Ahmed’s favor as he sent back the Protea batter in the seventh over of the innings.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): MI-77/2 (R Rickelton 37, Noor Ahmed 1/6) vs CSK
