India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre set the example on February 4, 2026, in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup semi-final. While chasing a massive target of 311 against Afghanistan, Mhatre showed the composure required. His knock ensured that India was always ahead of the required run rate. The match was held at the Harare Sports Club.

Mhatre’s composure at the crease was essential after the blistering start. Although the target seemed daunting, India never looked under pressure. The captain showed the right mix of patience and aggression. His knock with the bat put India in complete control.

By the time Mhatre was dismissed, India were just steps away from the final. The chase had been set up perfectly by the top order. Afghanistan struggled to claw their way back into the game. India looked destined to face England in the final.

Captain Mhatre Anchors Historic Chase

The chase began with fireworks from 14-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed 68 off just 33 balls. His rapid fifty came in only 24 deliveries and pushed India to 90 runs inside the first 10 overs. After Vaibhav’s dismissal, Ayush Mhatre joined Aaron George to rebuild and control the innings. The duo added a vital 114-run partnership for the second wicket. Mhatre brought up his half-century in 43 balls and later accelerated with back-to-back sixes off Roohullah Arab. He was dismissed for 62 off 59 balls, caught by Osman Sadat after a brilliant running catch.
