The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has extended the captaincy tenures of their ODI captain until the next ODI World Cup in 2027 in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia, while the same decision has been taken in the appointment of their T20I captain till the T20 WC 2028.

Bangladesh won their last ODI series against Pakistan at home by a margin of 2-1, besides earning success against Ireland at the start of the season in both the 50-over and T20 formats of the game. But due to the political situation, they didn’t travel to India and participate in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Bangladesh Cricket Board backs current leaders for long-term stability

BCB has locked Litton Das as their T20I captain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz until the next World Cup. Litton’s team had their T20I captain initially until the last World Cup, as Mehidy was appointed the 50-over captain last year and beat West Indies in October 2025 and Pakistan in March 2026.

Their cricket operations chairman, Nazmul Abedeen, reckoned that the board wanted to give the captains the best time and chance to rebuild the team.

“Since our T20 captain's tenure ended with the 2026 T20 World Cup, the current T20 captain and vice-captain will continue until the next T20 World Cup in 2028. At the same time, our ODI captain's tenure is also nearing its end. So, we feel it is very important that the captains can work uninterrupted and follow a long-term vision. He expressed in the reports of ESPN.

“Miraz has already been leading the team for about a year, and with the World Cup approaching, we thought that giving him this opportunity would allow him to organise and strengthen the team even better. In my view, Miraz has been doing well and has performed strongly for the team. Considering all these factors, this decision has been made to provide a long-term tenure.Abedeen shed light.

BCB has appointed Mohammad Rafique as a spin bowling consultant for one time.

What the decision means for ODI and T20 World Cup plans

That will give them the best chance to showcase their leadership in the white-ball formats during the next T20 and ODI World Cups. The fans hope to see their side lift the title. Litton Das will be a valuable member at the top order while Miraz offers them the all-round contribution with both bat and ball.

“Based on his performance, especially his bowling, and considering the tournaments he has played recently, he doesn't even seem like a retired cricketer. Even at this age, his intent and attitude on the field in a regular game are impressive. So we think that spinners of every level can benefit from him.Abdeen noted.

Bangladesh will host New Zealand in a week for the ODI and T20I series.
