The Barbados Royals have made a significant decision by retaining Sri Lankan mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana for the 2024 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Despite not having played any matches last year, Theekshana remains a key figure in the Royals’ plans for the upcoming season.

Maheesh Theekshana’s Retention

Theekshana’s journey in the CPL has been anything but smooth. Two years ago, he was picked by the Trinbago Knight Riders but couldn’t participate because he had not secured a no-objection certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket.

The Royals’ decision to retain Theekshana stems from his impressive track record and potential impact on the team. His ability to take wickets and maintain a low economy rate makes him a valuable asset, especially in the spin-friendly conditions of the Caribbean.

T20 Achievements

With 150 wickets in 145 T20 matches and an economy rate of 6.68, Theekshana has proven his worth in the shortest format of the game. His consistency and ability to perform under pressure have earned him a reputation as a reliable T20 bowler.

Quinton de Kock and David Miller

The return of Quinton de Kock and David Miller is a major boost for the Royals. Both players bring experience, skill, and leadership to the team, making them indispensable squad members.

Barbados Royals’ Performance in 2023

The 2023 season was challenging for the Barbados Royals, who finished second from bottom with only three wins from ten games. The absence of key players like Quinton de Kock and David Miller significantly impacted their performance.

Quinton de Kock and David Miller, both crucial to the team’s success, were unavailable last season. Their absence left gaps in the batting and leadership departments, contributing to the Royals’ struggles.

Team’s Overall Performance

The team’s overall performance in 2023 was below expectations. Inconsistent batting, coupled with a lack of depth in the bowling department, was a major factor in their underwhelming campaign.

Barbados Royals squad: Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, David Miller, Quinton de Kock, Maheesh Theekshana, Alick Athanaze, Naveen-ul-Haq, Obed McCoy, Kevin Wickham, Keshav Maharaj, Rahkeem Cornwall, Nyeem Young, Rivaldo Clarke, Ramon Simmonds.
