It was just the left-sided surface at the Arun Jaitley Stadium from the one, on which the Delhi Capitals posted a massive score of 264 against the Punjab Kings a couple of afternoons ago. But they perhaps had no idea of their situation during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The visiting captain, Rajat Patidar, used the word ‘obvious’ while opting to bowl first on a surface that looked drier and expected to get better to chase late in the evening. The Delhi captain, Axar Patel, wanted to do the same, but he perhaps never imagined the next nightmarish half an hour.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s double-wicket over dents Delhi in IPL 2026

On his second ball of the game, Bhuvneshwar Kumar got the opening wicket of young debutant Sahil Parakh. The ball swung late to uproot the stumps of the left-handed batter, who went back to the hut for the second-ball duck. It was his 29th wicket in the first over of the event, just behind Trent Boult (32). But he joined Boult by the end of the power play.

In his second over of the innings, Bhuvi started with the wicket of Tristan Stubbs for five runs. It was a lovely little out swinging delivery outside the off stump as Stubbs, rather than leaving it alone, decided to poke it away from the body and edged it into the hands of the lone slip fielder.

Two balls later, he got the wicket of Axar Patel. It was another good length delivery outside the off stump, swinging away as the southpaw looked to defend, but the ball went off the bottom edge back to the wicket-keeper. He finished his powerplay spell for 3/5 in three overs.

RCB shocks DC in nightmarish evening during IPL 2026

Delhi finished with 13 runs for the loss of six wickets thanks to Bhuvi and Josh Hazlewood, which is the lowest powerplay total of the competition. Abhishek Porel and David Miller played a few good shots around the park to get some runs for the side, but it didn’t last long either.

The latter failed to pull the short ball against Rasikh Salam as he was a bit early in closing the bat face with the ball taking the toe-end of his bat and going up in the sky, only for the wicket-keeper completing the catch. They went further down with the bat.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): DC- 59/7 (David Miller 19, Josh Hazlewood 3/8, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/5) vs RCB
