Mumbai Indians have suffered a major setback in their IPL 2026 campaign after experienced all-rounder Mitchell Santner was officially ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The five-time champions face another challenge because one of their key overseas players will miss the rest of the competition which makes their existing consistency problems worse.

Mumbai Indians have signed South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj to replace Santner after they lost their starting player. The franchise will hope the experienced left-arm spinner can strengthen their bowling attack during the crucial second half of the season.

Injury setback forces Mumbai Indians into squad change

The player suffered a left shoulder injury during the Mumbai Indians match against the Chennai Super Kings when he tried to catch a ball that was near the boundary line. The player left the field because he was experiencing pain and later reports confirmed that the injury would rule him out of IPL 2026.

The New Zealand all-rounder played an important role in balancing the side with his left-arm spin and useful lower-order batting. Santner bowled four matches this season and achieved five wickets while allowing runs at a controlled rate during high-pressure situations. The Mumbai Indians face difficulties because they have only won two out of their seven matches which puts them in danger of falling to the lowest position on the points table.

Keshav Maharaj named as replacement for Mitchell Santner

The Mumbai Indians have acquired South African spinner Keshav Maharaj to replace Santner for a fee of INR 75 lakh. Maharaj played in the T20I series against New Zealand and his international experience provides essential value to the team.

The left-arm spinner has previously played in the IPL, representing Rajasthan Royals in 2024. Maharaj has only played two IPL matches but people consider him an exceptional bowler because he demonstrates precise control and performs well under intense competition. Mumbai Indians will be hoping he can make an immediate impact as they look to revive their season.

What this means for Mumbai Indians’ balance going forward

The injury to Santner impacts multiple aspects of the bowling unit. The Mumbai Indians received extra batting depth because he could provide lower order batting contributions. The MI team will acquire a specialist spinner through Maharaj's squad addition but they must adjust their batting order.

The team needs to depend on Indian all-rounders or adjust their middle order to achieve balance. Mumbai Indians require immediate solutions to sustain their playoff hopes as the tournament reaches its critical stage.
