A major update came about a popular T20 franchise league. After spending a lot of time solving some legal issues, GLT20 Canada is not going to take the stage this year, in 2025. This update emerged freshly on Tuesday morning. Due to lack of required time, the organizers ruled out the possibility of arranging the tournament for this year. So, for now, no GLT20 2025.
According to reports, NCL Canada stakeholders confirmed that it was very little time they had after the contract signing to host the event in a rush and decided against it. The mayor of Brampton also confirmed that GT20 Canada won't be happening this year. He also informed us that they are building a cricket stadium, in collaboration with Cricket Canada, for hosting international cricket in the future.
The T20 league made some headlines in the recent past for their tussle with Bombay Sports. With the allegations for breaching, Cricket Canada terminated the contract with Bombay Sports in December 2024 and then signed an agreement with NCL Canada. From then on, NCL Canada is in charge of organizing the league and overseeing all the arrangements.
Notable points from GLT20 Canada 2024
Despite legal issues, GLT20 Canada 2024 attracted a good number of audiences through multiple neck-to-neck matches. Star players across the globe participated in the league and made the competition more attractive. Toronto Nationals was the winner of the 2024 edition by defeating one of the tough teams of the league—Montreal Tigers—in the final. The Montreal Tigers were the defending champions before that.
George Munsey (Brampton Wolves), with 218 runs, emerged as the leading run scorer of the edition, while Romario Shepherd (Toronto Nationals) and Junaid Siddique (Toronto Nationals), with 14 wickets each, were the joint leading wicket takers in 2024. In total, 6 teams participated in the tournament—Montreal Tigers, Toronto Nationals, Brampton Wolves, Mississauga Panthers, Surrey Jaguars, and Vancouver Knights.
