Day 4 of the 1st Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between England and India at Headingley, Leeds, on June 23, 2025, witnessed yet another shift in momentum as India established a dominating position only to see their last six wickets fall for a mere 31 runs. After coming back at 90/2, India scored 364 in the second innings, leaving England with a target of 371. KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) were the stars with an excellent 195-run stand. But England's fast bowlers, spearheaded by Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse, ensured India couldn't capitalize fully. At stumps, England were 21/0 at the close of play on their way to 350 more runs for the win on the last day with all wickets in hand. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled without luck in the short session.

India 2nd Innings: Bowled Out for 364

India began Day 4 with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease. Though Gill departed early, chopping one onto his stumps off Carse for just 8, Rahul and Rishabh Pant counterattacked with discipline and flair. Rahul's 137 (247 balls, 18 fours) was a lesson in patience and timing, and Pant's 118 (140 balls, 15 fours, 3 sixes) was packed with aggressive strokeplay. They drove India's lead beyond 300 and put the game in their favor. However, once Pant fell to Shoaib Bashir just before tea, the collapse began. Karun Nair (20) couldn’t last long, and India went from 333/4 to 364 all out. Josh Tongue wrecked the tail with 3 wickets in four balls in one over, including Siraj and Bumrah. Jadeja was left stranded at 25*, and the innings succumbed soon, giving England a target of 371.

England 2nd Innings: 21/0, Need 350 Runs

Confronted with the tough task of 371 on Day 5 pitch, England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett began cautiously. Crawley struck a couple of crisp boundaries to move to 12*, while Duckett remained solid on 9*. The pair batted through the six overs before stumps without much trouble, as Bumrah, Siraj, and Jadeja couldn't find the breakthrough. With 350 more runs needed and 10 wickets in hand, all four results are on the table heading into the final day.

ENG vs IND, 1st Test Day 4: Key Moments

  • Rahul-Pant Dominate: KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant’s 195-run partnership gave India the platform they needed. Rahul is now the only Indian opener with three Test hundreds in England, while Pant is the first Indian wicketkeeper to score two Test tons in a Test match in England.
  • England's Fiery Fightback: Josh Tongue’s triple strike in a single over broke India’s momentum. Brydon Carse added his three wickets, including the all-important Rahul.
  • Steady English Start: England’s openers saw off the new ball safely and caused no immediate damage heading into day five, keeping the game alive with a target of 371.
