The director revealed that Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Virat Kohli uses the comedy film Dhol as his pre-match relaxation method to achieve better mental state.

Priyadarshan has worked as director for more than 40 years and led many comedy films which became cult classics including Hera Pheri and Hungama and Malamaal Weekly and Dhol. The filmmaker achieved remarkable success in comedy yet he declared during a recent interview that he wants to create serious movies because he reached his limit for developing comedic material.

Dhol achieved unexpected success according to Priyadarshan because the movie failed to attract audiences at theaters when it debuted in 2007. The film found its audience through television broadcasts and streaming platforms which showed the movie. The director states that the film has developed into a cult classic which viewers now watch.

Priyadarshan shared that he frequently hears accounts about cricketers who watch the film before their crucial matches. He said that Virat Kohli and other players watch Dhol as their relaxation method while they exchange quotes from the movie's most well-known lines. The filmmaker expressed his joy that people now value the movie which existed before its theatrical debut.

Priyadarshan praises Kohli’s screen presence and reflects on comedy filmmaking

Kohli has not confirmed whether he watched the movie yet he collaborated with the director on previous projects. Priyadarshan once directed a commercial advertisement for the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru that featured Kohli alongside Chris Gayle and Shane Watson.

The director also shared that he was impressed by Kohli’s presence in front of the camera and even suggested that the star batter could try acting in films in the future.

Priyadarshan explained his filmmaking process by stating that he found comedy to be the most difficult genre because it relies on precise timing and acting skills. His comedy films from earlier years still provide entertainment to viewers who watch them today despite his plans to make serious films.
