Chasing an average total of 166 runs in their allotted 20 overs during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) needed only a strong start inside the powerplay to kill the game at the first stage.

The purple management decided to bring back their aggressive opening batter from New Zealand, Finn Allen, replacing another Kiwi, Tim Seifert, who hasn’t been going in the last few clashes. And at a stage where they couldn’t afford another defeat or a slow start, the decision was expected to be made at some point in time.

It was the fourth over in the chase. On the first delivery, Allen tried to play an innovative shot by shuffling across, while the bowler tried to get away from the arc of the batter. It was miles past the tramlines and beat the dive of the wicket-keeper for a wide, in addition to the boundary.

On the next ball, the opener swiveled across and picked the length to hammer the pull over the deep square leg region for a massive six. The fielder perhaps thought of having a chance, but could watch it sailing over his outstretched hands.

On the third legal delivery of the over, Allen picked the length early and stayed on the front foot to pull the good length delivery into the stands for a 77-meter six. He backed it up with another boundary, swiveling across and drilling the pull square of the two men in the deep region.

But it ended in disappointment as Pat Cummins dismissed his man for 29 runs off 13 balls, with two sixes and three boundaries. The right-handed batter was early in picking the slow ball and found the fielder, who grabbed a good low catch. That was the most expensive over of the Australian captain in T20 history.

Kolkata’s aggressive batting rules out SRH in 166-run chase

The Kolkata Knight Riders raced away to 105/1 at the halfway mark as Angkrish Raghuvanshi contributed a fine knock of unbeaten 35 runs off 23 balls with the help of two boundaries and as many sixes at a strike rate of 152.17.

Hyderabad began their batting aggressively but lost track in the middle overs with continuous wickets. That didn’t let them get the big and firing overs in the death overs as the home side lost eight wickets for 60 runs in their last 10 overs of the batting.

Brief Scores (at the time of writing): KKR 169/3 (A Raghuvanshi 59, Sakib Hussain 1/17) beat SRH 165 (Travis Head 61, V Chakravarthy 3/36) by 7-wickets.
