The MI captain has missed out on the previous two clashes of the franchise against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In Hardik’s absence, their vice-captain, Suryakumar Yadav, shouldered the responsibility. Even though the five-time champions won their previous contest against the Lucknow side, they failed to continue the same success against Bengaluru and were eliminated from the IPL 2026.

The T20 World Cup-winner for the Indian side came back into the franchise in 2024 and replaced their most successful captain, Rohit Sharma, in the leadership role. But that season was a disaster for them as they ended with the wooden spoon.
