ICC takes action against Prabath Jayasuriya — Here's what he did in the Sri Lanka vs India 2nd Test

The left-arm spinner of the Sri Lankan side, Prabath Jayasuriya, has become the third player to be sanctioned for an incident during the second Test of the series against India, which is played at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. He joins two more players, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando, to be fined. 

There was so much heat among the players from the start of the second Test match. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Fernando were engaged in a heated argument on the opening day of the game and were fined 25% of their match fees along with being given one demerit point. 

Official reprimand & demerit point — The full ICC sanction against Jayasuriya, explained

Jayasuriya was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for the player and the player support personnel, which is related to the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and the fitting during the international encounter.

“Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be sanctioned for an incident during the second ICC World Test Championship contest against India after he was hit with an official reprimand following his dismissal in his side's first innings.” The ICC media release stated.

The two on-field umpires, Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, the third umpire Rod Tucker, and the fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge. He has been given the penalty of 25% of his match fee. One demerit point has also been added to his disciplinary record, which is his first offence in the two years.  

Third player sanctioned in the Test — What Jayasuriya did after getting out

On the last delivery of the third over, India's Manav Suthar bowled a full delivery, close to the yorker length, to Jayasuriya, who was late on the shot as the ball brushed the front pad and hit the bat. The impact was in front of the middle, and the ball-tracking confirmed that it would have gone on to hit the stumps.

Before that delivery, Jayasuriya was not happy with the light later on the second day’s play. He wanted the umpires to go off, which they eventually did, just the right-handed batter’s dismissal.

An angry Jayasuriya stuck the boundary cushion with his bat on his way back to the pavilion. He later admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, Andy Pycroft.
