Toss and first innings:
After a 20-match streak, India won the toss and decided to bowl first. For the toss, KL Rahul used his left arm, instead of his right, and it worked.
Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana started things off nicely for India with the new ball. Singh helped India to get rid of Ryan Rickelton, who was dismissed for a duck. After a couple of narrow escapes, Quinton de Kock scored 106, supported by the skipper's, Temba Bavuma's, 48-run innings. Prasidh Krishna proved expensive during the initial stage of the first innings. But he quickly recollected himself and bagged 4 wickets, and 4 wickets for Kuldeep Yadav as well. Despite a good start by Quinton and Temba, the underperforming South African middle order allowed the team to register only 270 runs in exchange for 10 wickets.
